I have a 42re from a 93 ZJ and was wondering if it was possible to swap that trans into a 98, or any other year for that matter (ignoring transfercase issues).

I know the tourqe converter is different, so I don't think so. 93-95 is one style, 96 is another, and 97-98 is yet another bolt pattern.

42REs in 1993.3-1996 ZJs are interchangeable.
42REs in 1997-1998 ZJs are interchangeable.

Also note that among the earlier 42REs, there are two different flexplate bolt patterns. One has the bolt holes evenly spaced at 90 degree angles. The other spaces the bolt holes a few degrees off: (92, 88, 92, 88).

    Hope that helps,
    Cam

Ok, I have a matching flexplate for the TQ converter. I'm more concerned about the electrical hook ups than the bolt up. Basically I have an engine and transmission from a 93 and want to put them in a 98. I have the newer style trans mount on the transmission so the cross member will not be an issue. I also have a transfer case so that is taken care of. So all bolt up issues aside will the electrical connections be the same.

Wait what does it mean1993.3? Is that the brake off for the seperate TCM? The engine and trans came out of an early 93 with a seperate ECM and TCM.

The earliest 93s came with AW4s. 93.3 simply designates the cutoff between usage of that tranny and the 42RE.

Ah ok. I just thought about the crank sensor and the flexplate timing marks. Are the later models any different in that set up? Or is it just the torque converter bolt pattern?

Thanks for the help so far.

Well I really did not think of the electrical aspect. I think you'll run into issues because the pre-95's have the split system (ECU and TCU) and the OBDI. I don't think it would work just as the ax15 won't work in the OBDII zj's.

the plate should be the same as far as measurements it's just like what ATL ZJ said about the indexing of the flexplate bolts.
I got lucky and found one from a buddy that is a 95 now I just need a 242 and I'll swap it in and do a nice writeup on it
