Alright I got some plans/ideas for the dub this winter, should be a lot of fun and new experiences haha. I've been talkin with a local guy on Pirate who has a 9" for sale...built to the hilt. Strange nodular 3rd, Daytona pinion support, pinion guard, 35spl detroit locker, 35spl moser shafts and its set up for claytons. I should know within a week if that deal is going to work out for me, if it does it will be nice as I'll never have to worry about the rear axle again (atleast for a long time lol). It has the clamp style lower spring retainers which is a definate bonus for me with my spring falling out issues, and at the same time I would be rebuilding my bumpstop extensions as I destroyed and lost one last trip to Barrett.

Other then that I've got my boatside ideas, I want to go up as high as I can.

If Im looking for an f-150 44, which years do I want one out of?

77 or earlier, they've got the weld on wedges. 78-79 are cast.

And to add to this, 76 and 77 had disk brakes. 73-75 are the same axle but had drum brakes. So unless you plan on swapping knuckles, stick with 76-77.

Would '79 knuckles for for disc brakes?

I ask because there is a '79 axle (minus the axle shafts) on CL for only $65

well the 79 would have the cast on wedges, your pretty much limited to running the ford-style radius arms. Those axles might be a little wider than my jeep 44 also, you might want to check.

Yeah the Ford 44s from the F150 and Big Broncos are 65" WMS, your Waggy 44 is like 63" right?

The WJ is 63" IIRC? Im thinking rear wheel adapters to fit the different bolt pattern. Would the adapters in the rear be enough to have the axle widths close enough, compared to the front?

The '79 WMS is 66" so screw that.

I'm totally up for picking up a Waggy off craigslist, taking the axle, and parting it out. But are they all LP?

I have a 9" in the rear of my jeep right now with 35 spline moser axles, detroit locker, full claytons bracket, strange nodular 3rd, daytona pinion support and a u-bolt style 1350 yoke. I'm stoked.

Doin a disk brake conversion and tinkering with the idea of setting up an abs speed sensor to read a tone ring on the yoke. We will see how that works out.

Nice! You'll love the disc conversion, one of the easiest things I did to the 9". It's fun having 3/4 ton brakes in the rear and the dinky stock ones up front, the rear will lock up way before the front will.

And those pics remind me of when I bought my 9...

Ahh hahaha how awesome is that, the only way you can carry one of these SOB's in a grand.

I've been doing my research, and liked the idea of doing a ford rotor with a caddy caliper for the ebrake. That means I would use the same rotors front and rear with interchangeable calipers. BUT I don't know the final solution everyone used for the difference in thickness from the drum brake backing plate so I'm not sure. I also just found a method, someone used a sidekick rotor and subaru front caliper, as they used front ebrakes. I like it.

I just cut out the center of the drum backing plate, bolted it to the end of the axle tube, traced the flange onto the cut out piece, then went at it with a grinder. Came out pretty even, I only have a small leak but I think that's because the seal on the axle shaft is bad. I went for about a month before I noticed it was leaking, to fix it I just put RTV on the tube flange and the mounting plate that's on the shaft... not more leaks so far. Costs nothing and it works.

Hmm. I got the crazy idea in my head of attempting to swap over the WJ's brakes, we will have to see how far fetched it is when I pull the 44a out.

Also, I counted 48 teeth on one of the rear shafts ABS tone rings. Thats damn nice because I'm going to be getting a tone ring machined to be pressed onto the yoke to read speed. To read the same speed as right now it has to have 4.56 times less teeth than I do currently because of the gear reduction. I can round to 10 teeth (similar to 4.80 gears), so my speedo should actually be closer than it is right now.

Tore down the 44a today, pulling it tomorrow most likely. It looks like with a redrill I *might* be able to get the WJ's old rear brakes working, that would be nice to retain stock ebrake and such. Here are some pics from today.

about 5 miles on a broken shaft? Yeah ouch.

The teeth themselves are about 1/16", the gap seems to be 1/8, so when I get the yoke tone ring made I will try to make sure the gaps are 2x the size of the teeth.

This is the shaft I put in to replace the one that broke, I don't know if I didn't notice before of if it happened on this trip, but the splines seem SLIGHTLY twisted

Hmm haha. the old 44a shafts have a neckdown about 3" before the splines that necks down to less than 1.25", 9" ones are 1.5" with zero neckdowns.

Tore the 44a out today, been sick all week and still am so the going is slow.

Never noticed that I dented the cover, must be new. Look how much of the bottom bolt is worn off

Both shafts splines have a little twist to them...damn.

And to think one of those shafts was only in the truck for a single barrett lake trip, and after I broke the first one I was trying to be nice on the new one...so much for that lol!

I want to build a 609 next! I mean shit I was lookiing at a pirate thread earlier and the guy had been rollin on 42" Rockers on his 35 spline chromo 9", had never broken it so was stepping up to 44"s, I need a front axle that can hang! Haha

Hah, that looks like my 44A before I swapped to a new axle; ground down, twisted, and nowhere near worth selling to someone else!. I swapped it out for a 60,9" hybrid. When I worked out the brakes on my rear I did the El Dorado calipers. Mated with the front D30 calipers, the pedal was less than desirable. I wish you better luck with your 44 disks... I presume they are the stock Waggy variety?

Oh yeah the housing is scrap for sure, I'm going to sell the gears, carrier, and locker if they all pass my personal inspection.

Actually I'm hoping I can get the stock 44a backing plate, rotor, and caliper to work so I can retain my stock ebrake and cables as well. The pic below shows the 44a backing plate bolt spacing vs the 9" retainer spacing

A question for ya Eric, did you ever get rid of the D30? If so what was your ABS solution? I'm going to be doing some tinkering to see if I can get a tone ring on the 9" yoke but I've never seen it done.

Dove in today, drilled out the backing plates to fit the housings. I'm going to use a pair of old rear rotors to make spacers out of to have the correct brake backspacing. I'm going to cut the wheel mount face off, its 1/4" thick and will make up my 1/4" spacing difference perfectly. Next in line, figure/work out a spacer for the bearing retainer.

hmm....not a super huge fan of that re-drill. All the braking force is transferred into shear loads on those bolts, and now 2 of the 4 dont have any bearing surface to put the load into.
