    Hmm!

An hour or hour and a half, not too bad!

The width from u-joint center to u-joint center on the 609 is going to be pretty dang similar to the 44, the outers are where the extra width comes from. This makes it AWESOME for me, because I can do a direct comparison of bracket placement. The white line on the 609 is the coil center. I'm going to be inboarding the lower mounts a few inches on the 609 vs the 44, and I'm going to have the shock land low on the axle tube so I squeeze a longer shock in AND more uptravel hehe.

I only have a couple tires right now...hahaha

That housing looked huge before but seeing it next to the 44 its really not that bad size wize. It almost looks narrower but Im sure the knucks will make up for that.

*akward silence* LOL! Last time I tried to make it to GSW from sac definately bit me in the ass :P. In all honesty though, my group has an idea about running the Rubicon with our dads that weekend for fathers day, it'd be the first time doin our style wheelin for all of our dads so it would be pretty dang cool. It's not set in stone yet, but even then I'm a little wary of doin 800 miles each way in the jeep haha. Dunno if I know a car trailer I could borrow...hmmm

So I have a little interesting thing going with the 9". This is the best pattern I've run so far. It looks decent, but the concave side looks is a little off. The only online pattern I've found that's similar says the pinion is too shallow, needs to go deeper. My catch is the fact that this current pattern was run with ZERO pinion shims. I've run it with a .012, .014, and .018 none of which looked better. What say you?

    The good side:

3rd image down is similar to what I'm encountering:

I think I would rock that. The pinion might be a hair deep but if there are no shims then you'd have to get a different set to change the pattern. Try increasing the backlash about .002 and see what that does to the pattern.

You say the pinion looks a little deep to you? Hmmm. I tried it with .012, .014, and .018 pinion shims which pull the pinion outward, and wasn't any more satisfied with the pattern. Maybe I need a middle ground between none and .012? My backlash was at .009 when I ran this pattern, I can definately try opening it up a tad just to see, though I feel that's getting towards the upper end of spec.

Here's another pattern I ran I forgot I took pics of. This is a pattern with shims, though I don't remember which ones.
This pattern looks even closer to C from the chart above, more similar characteristics than the first. It looks like I was going in the right direction by removing shims, I'm just out of shims to remove so I might have to run it!

But this side not so much

The last two sets of gears I've had to set up required running backlash on the looser side to get a good pattern. Pinion shim changes wouldnt help. The first pics look better.

Im not terribly familliar with the 9" why do shims pull the pinion out?? Normally they make the pinion deeper.

the 9" has a removeable pinion support similar to the 14B. You assemble that unit with a crush sleeve/solid spacer to get pinion preload, and then there are actually shims that go between that pinion support and 3rd member during installation. So the more shims you have, the further out the pinion is. I have no shims, so the pinion is as far inward as it can be.

I'll definately play with the backlash, run a few patterns and get back to ya!

I thought it might be something like that but I figured that couldnt be it since it would leak. Go figure..

It actually slips into the housing a little ways too, sealed by an o ring. It works really well!

using the exact same pinion support and case and I have no leak either, I have RTV between the support and case though

Saweet! Can you change the cutting path so it starts off the part and then runs into it, so you don't get slop on the part?

Yep you can! In fact if you look closely, I did so for the cuts in that pic . I didn't do a whole lot, just enough to make sure the pierce was out of the way of the final item.

I friggin love this thing. My super tall coil buckets haha:

Haha yep, those look about like mine. How high off the tube do they sit? I believe mine are about 2.5" above the tube.
