    Rob,

I am dealing with a major problem right now that maybe you might know the answer too.

I have a 42RE and it leaks like a stuck pig. I have had it apart about 7 times and no one can fix it.

I am going down again this Sat. to pull the OD housing (again). I have not been present the last few times it has been torn apart, so I am told that the gasket between the trans and OH housing seals everything except a little piston that is sealed by 2 small o-rings, the guy I am dealing with thinks that maybe some silicone needs to be put on the area around the piston BEFORE the OD housing goes in to hold it all together.

Does this make any sense to you? I am not sure if I am explaining it correctly or not.
If you are looking at the back of the tranny I think the piston is in the bottom right corner somewhere but not really sure.

I guess the question is should ANY silicone sealer be used when reassembling the tranny?

Silcone to fix a leak on an RE is just putting a band aid on it. There is a gasket between the OD housing and main case inorder to replace this gasket you need to disassemble the trans remove the over running clutch retainer/OD piston retainer, there used to be a gasket that was cut out around the retainer and you would have to cut the old gasket around the retainer but DC stopped making them a few years ago, make sure the gasket area is very clean and do not use anything but a plastic scraper to remove anything from the old gasket as a razor blade can knick the case deep enought to create another leak in the area and sanding disks and stuff like that remove too much material unless its a white 3M roloc used at the proper speed of less than 12000 RPM, there are 2 seals in between the OD and trans case they are for the OD piston silicone on the piston will guarantee the OD and possably 3rd gear will no longer work.
    Hope that helps.

Dang, not sure if I can do that....This seems like the cheapest route to rebuilding a 42re though.

I think only the v8's have a check ball in the cooler line, right? or is it like you said inside the stock cooler? if so I'm replacing mine ASAP, my first transmission died bc of a overheat in the cooler lines, so I cleaned just the lines and cooler out with transmission fluch junk in a spray can

check valve in cooler line around the front of the engine. it is at one of the rubber/metal line connections in a brass fitting with an arrow etched on it.

Well I am the slowest turd in the fucking world ... I put the tranny and t case in ... And I either crushed the crank position sensor or fucked up something else.. It wont start... I have changed the neutral safety switch and the coil and I have a buddy coming over (he is a mechanic) he is going to help me diagnose..

He also has a wiring manual and if we cant figure it out we are going to install a toggle switch and a push button.. (I like the one that says "GO BABY GO" on it...

He is coming over this week so I will let you know soon..

I have my trans out and started reading the manual. Did you use any of the special tools? I see they want you to use an alignment tool to stick in the overdrive section when you pull it off. Do you really need it? Also the spring compressor dealie, do you need that or can you make do with something else? I'm getting a little nervous now because those tools are expensive.
