Anyone want to rebuild their tranny???

Well I decided to do mine and it went a little something like this.....


I started by taking the 7 bolts out of the oil pump...


It wont take a geneous to figure out that I had already pulled the primary gears at this point and set the pump back in but .... Have a poser pic anyway...

Then I just grabbed it on the ridges with Vice grips and bumped the case with a rubber mallet while I pulled on it.. (switching from side to side to make it pull out evenly..)Or you could just use a pulley puller and do it the right way...

Then you remove the front band....
I didnt get a picture but you just loosen the band adjuster and pull out the band.. Its pretty straight forward.. I will try to take a picture of it tommorow as the tranny is still on my custom tranny rebuild table...


Then pull out the primary assembly..


The assembly comes into two pieces...Open it up..

Here is the secondary assembly .. It pulls out of the primary..



Here is the back side of the primary




Pull out the lock ring and remove the clutches and spacers.




Put this one aside it needs to go back...



Damn thumbnail.. Anyway.. This is the old clutches after removing the spacer..



New Clutches and spacers in the primary.. (old ones are on the left..)




same for the secondary set..Pull lock ring.



This is the assembly back together.. Old secondary clutches are on the ground.



Then I pulled this lock ring off and inspected the planetary gears..


They look great dont they... Oooooh ....Aaaaaaaah....



I took the overdrive unit off and all the tollerances where within spec...
And it requires several special tools.. (And since I have an entire spare tranny just incase I have problems with the overdrive...) I decided to leave it alone...

I also did a Transgo shift kit but I dont have any pictures.. Suffice it to say the video and the manual that come with the shift kit is very good and I had no problem following directions...

Now for the most important part.. New Tranny cooler..

Started with a Derale tranny cooler with fan..


And mounted it inside the back of my truck....



I understand most cant do this but I can so...



And ran the lines..I used all braided stainless since I have a friend in a speed shop that makes custom lines for me...

since its mounted to the back wall of my Jeep.. It pushes into the bed area....



And mounted the Tranny temp gauge....

Here is where the temp sensor is going to cut into the line..I will have to cut the line and add a few more fittings for the sensor . I will get pics of that when I do...




Thats it for now.. Waiting on a custom Torque converter and then I will finish the install of the tranny and hook up the cooling lines...

(Catchy name ...) They are doing it.. But just for shits and giggles how much we talking about for the level 10??

300 shipped for a heavy duty stock stall, probably about 400 shipped for a heavy duty custom torque converter.. and I think 500 shipped for a bulletproof one. How much was all the stuff for the rebuild?

how about you come over to houston and rebuild my spare junk I too have like 3 manuals on the 42re but am still intimidated to try and rebuild an auto, but the going rate to rebuild a 42re around here is about 2600! OUCH!

i wonder how you tranny runs after it is all done? and if you will have any leftover bolts

Hmm, that doesn't seem too hard. I was going to rebuild a TH350 a while back, but ended up sending it off instead.

Its back together ...No left over bolts...


As soon as I get the torque converter back and finish the plumbing I will let you know how it runs...

Around $80..

So you are looking at around $200 for the parts to do it and honestly only about a day.. Now if you need to rebuild your overdrive unit it will take longer and you will have to buy some crazy tools... (that same guy sells them..)

How hard was it to slide on and off the OD section? Is it a pain to line up the parking pawl when sliding it on?

Big pain in my ass to get the park prawl back on till I figured it out.. you have to rotate the tail shaft while you push the valve body into place..


But the over drive unit came off pretty easily... Getting it back on was easy as well except for aiming the park rod.. but like I said once I got someone to lend me a hand and turn the tail shaft it slipped right in...

Hopefully you get it all put back together and working good. I know my trans has seen better days, but everyone tells me that rebuilding an automatic isn't an easy task. But the savings is really tempting.

I can tell you when I saw the pile of clutch packs and parts I freaked out.. But I decided to try it anyway and it really wasnt that hard... I think people worry because they think its really complex.. But you can see in the pics that its really not...

Besides ... Have you seen the idiots that work in the tranny shops???

I've just always been intimidated by auto trannies. They seem super complex, and the fact that if I fuck up during the rebuild I'll have to drop the tranny AGAIN, fix it, and then reinstall it just sucks. I was thinking about having a performance rebuild done by somebody reputable. I've heard of too many cheap rebuilds shitting the bed a few thousand miles down the road.

I talked to a few tranny guys and they told me the most common problem with rebuilds going south is that they dont take the check valve out of the cooler... And they new tranny over heats... I tossed my factory cooler and the lines... Now I have new cooling lines and a new cooler... So I am not worried about my tranny.. I honestly cant wait to take it for the first spin... To finally have a tranny that shifts good and feels strong...

I have the utmost trust in my tranny guy...He is the coolest dude I know...

Swamp Boy while you had it apart did you change the piston seals in the front(primary) and rear(secondary) drums if you did you would have found the finish on the front drum and piston ready to tear a new seal. The front drum and piston were machined improperly by the suppliers and will only last about 50-60000 miles on adverage. When I get over this damn virus I'm going to tear into Stinkomans trans, I'll try and take pics while I do it. I have rebuilt almost 100 42,44, 46 and 47 RH/RE's over the past 8 years. I've done 2 45/5-45RFE's and about 6 42RLE in TJ's and KJ's, I work for a Jeep dealer.

Yes I did and I sanded them with emory cloth to smoth them out.. I thought that it was specific to my Tranny so I didnt post anything about that...

No need to scare the others...


Post up the pics when you tear in to his ...I was unaware of the casting problem...Glad you posted up...

I also changed the giant rubber o-ring on the oil pump but I didnt post about that either.....

I guess I will have to take better pics next time.. I know several guys in the area with grands... One of them is bound to need a rebuild soon....



Oh and Trojan man... I am still Pre-op. But I cant wait for the boob job....

Like me. Once it gets warmer I'm going to rebuild my 42RE. More information would be great. The more detail the better.

Tehy are very simple transmissions to rebuild, there are a few special tools needed especially for the OD assembly one of which is a shop press and a few Miller tools to compress a spring that is about the size of a coil spring in it.
