i took this quote from another thread of mine that i edited as to not put two completely different topics in the same thread like i always do.
....
guess its time for a real intake. right now i have the stock airbox with the stock intake part of it chopped from my wreck and put next to the grill. what's the best intake to avoid the h2o during water crossings? i was thinking about a turbocity, but i hear they suck, but that looks like the best one protection wise. i'm going down to copper canyon in mexico in december, and plan to have to do some rivers that i'm not exactly comforable with that way my zj is now.
....
other than this i was planning an electric fan with an off switch. i've already sealed up the ignition system wires with dielectric grease. what else do i need to do? not trying to drive with water over the hood, so not really considering a snorkel or anything crazy like that. took a quick look at my breather vents in my diffs and they look okay...what about the tranny and tcase? didn't get a chance to have a look at them yet as its F snowing outside today.
Turbo City has served me well for almost 5 years now. I've wheeled all over Colorado and the only place that ever had concerned me was the Teller County Car Wash on Longwater and Hackett which of course are now closed.
so go with that? would insulating it help?
Build/buy a snorkle. Why? Because THIS sucks:
It's cheap insurance. Even cheaper would be to stay out of deep water.
Snorkel is overrated and usually uneeded... My turbo shitty intake put my intake a good 4 feet off the ground. If I'm in that deep, ingesting water into my engine is the least of my worries.
Frankly, do what I used to do when my crap was stock: before going through deep water, disconnect the air hose at the throttle bottle on top of the engine, and zip tie a clean rag in place to keep you from sucking in bugs. Total cost? 20 cents.
that is a great idea. is it removable? what size tubing is it, and how did you make the air box connection water proof, or do you have a k&n?
what else can i do for water crossings?
i figure if it dies for some reason in the middle, i just winch it to someplace dry, pull the plugs and crank it to get the water out, then put new plugs in and see what happens.
what is that wire going to on the front on the red zj nate?
Build a snorkle out of ABS tubing.
I'm making one for my ZJ.
THAT´S about it...Originally Posted by OverkillZJ
But you definitely should relocate the stock air inlet from right behind the front grill to somewhere in the aft area of your engine bay. Or just do it like OverkilZJ did. Could be done right before entering the lake...
Just spend some of the investment you saved on the snorkel on "waterproof" ignition wires and/or electric radiator cooler fan which could be switched off while swimming...

Did you see the pictures I just posted?! I didn't intentionally get into deep water.. shit happens. It can go from hub deep to over the hood in a matter of inches. If you ask me, it's cheap insurance!Originally Posted by OverkillZJ
Ok, but my setup would've been fine in your pictures, so what's your point?Originally Posted by Jim311
EDIT: I'm not arguing that snorkels are bad, just that 99.999999999999% of the rigs I see them on aren't needed. It's like chrome wheels for most. With the amount of lift I had and the fact that my air intake is at the top/back of the hood, I don't see the need.

I depends where your wheeling really. In Alaska there are a good number of deep water crossings. Keep in mind in that pic I'm sitting on 7" of lift and 36s.
The wire across the hood is the winch controller. I had gotten stuck in some muskeg a few times. Once I need to winch, I usually just leave the controller plugged in until I'm back at the trail head.
It's 2.5" ABS I believe. This is basically what I did: http://akextreme4x4.com/tech/snorkle/snorkle.htm
Brentt used 3", but I think on the older ZJs it's setup a bit different. I had to trim a little bit of sheetmetal on mine to get the 2.5" to pass. The snorkel part comes off, just just stick in on there for water crossings. The only down side of it is it's not very effective for the surprise 6 foot deep mud holes.
Hello guys but i got the perfect idea for A Snorkel for Grand Cherokee.. I just made my own Snorkel and put it on my Grand.. I got some pictures if you guys are interested email me so i can send you the pics.. and give you some tips.. The cool thing is that you can make it for $40.00.. w/ paint and everything
how did you hook up 2.5" to the stock airbox? i got some 3", but it looks too big to fit between my bull bar and grill.Originally Posted by nate
Pull out the stock little air dam thing and the air box has a 3" opening in the front. I got an adapter to fit and just RTVed it in place. Then a few 45* elbows, and that's about it. $15-20 worth of parts, all from Ace... Home Depot, Lowe's etc would have all that stuff as well.
I have a few pics on my laptop I think, PM me your email and I'll see if I can find them to send them to you. It's not a complicated setup, though it took a a bit of trail and error.
The water crossing in those pics was quite deep. That was actually the 2nd time I was crossing, and I got water into something cause it starting missing on a cylinder about halfway through. Went away after a few mins, so I'm not too sure what got wet that wasn't supposed to. Air filter was dry, so maybe a bit of moisture in the distributor or something.
The guy with the XJ, his name is Sven, he writes for the mag that 4 Wheel Parts puts out, Outdoor Adventures. Anyhow, he had a few inches of water on his floorboards... whoops!

so you use a 3" to 2.5" reducer and 2.5" piping and bends? do you still run the clutch fan? any problems with it?
Yeah the reducer I just RTV to the air box. Also I RTVed the holes in the bottom of the box, drain holes I guess?
I have a Taurus fan. I forgot to turn it off in a water crossing like that pic, and it didn't do anything to it.
