Here in the Denver area, need a good pick n pull to grab a 231. any suggestions? heard of a few places in aurora..... the 231 is the best choice right? not the 242???? plan on the novak shifter... Jeeps Unlimited out of Erie wants tooo much.. Thanks.
231 > 242
buy overkills.
Not a 100% sure but the out shaft needs to have the proper number of splines to mate to your tranny.
I guess the 242 is the much better choice to replace the 249 because then you´ll have 4Hi with open diff...Originally Posted by longmontzj
you´ll need one with 23spline (not 21spline as for early XJ´s!!) input shaft!

Keep an eye on the For Sale section at Colorado4x4.org I've gotten two from there for good prices.
242 is a more streetable TC. The option of having fulltime is better for situations where either you're putting alot of power to the ground, or in rainy/mixed weather scenarios. The 231 is a 26.85% stronger transfercase (torque capacity). Unless you're running a high performance engine 231 is probably the way to go, unless you want to keep AWD.
I’ve driven the 242 and 231. I LIKE the feel of the 231 on the road. I also like the simplicity of the internals and the fact that it is a tried and true t-case for moderate trail and rock use.
You will most likely need to swap your input shaft to the correct length. Depending on the year of the 231 you get you can use your input shaft from the 249. If you get a t-case from a 1997 TJ the input bearing will be different. I just pulled my bearing from my 249 and used a hammer to tap it into o the 231. There is a slim change the planetary gears will be different. But the likely of that happening is slim to none.
This is by no means a difficult swap. I did it when I was 17 with no manual, no previous t-case experience. It took me 6 hours to pull the 231 apart. About 20 min to pull the 249 apart and about 30 min to reassemble. Watch out for the 231 fluid pump. They are plastic and break very easy.
thanks guys 231 is soon to come
231 buy Overkill's (Matt)
