Where is the breather for a 1998 AW4 tranny ?
I have looked just about everywhere I can on the tranny and can't find it.
The tranny started puking fluid from the torque seal and the tranny output seal all of a sudden. Before pulling it, I wanted to check to make sure the breather was not plugged.
Is it in the bell housing like my 46RH? ...... I hope not. I found out about that breather the hard way. Sucked in a lot of water in a deep water crossing a while back.
These are from my 46RH.... Is the AW4 the same?

Mine's on top of the tranny zip tied to the TV cable, but it's a 93. I couldn't immagine a 98 being much different.
Did you put an AW4 in your Jeep? Stock 4.0 tranny for a 98 is 42RE.... and it's in the same spot. Same deal with all Dodge trannies.
Guess I've been lucky, no water in the tranny from doing a bunch of water crossings like this:
I posted its a 98, Its actually a 97. I think it's a AW4 but I could be wrong.
I found the tranny breather line. One of the zip ties was to tight crimping the hose closed.
The picture above is pretty much how I screwed 2 trannys. The first time I stalled in water that deep and the second I miss judged how deep the hole was I was going into. It was a very soft bottom and I sunk. I don't think the breather hole is a huge issue as long as you keep moving. Once you stop though Your tranny takes a drink.
The last tranny I put in, I modified the breather. It now goes up as high as I can get it under the hood.
I have no clue why I did not do that after the first tranny.
Cheers
you have a 42re or something like that
the aw4 vent is ontop of the trans
