When I did hydro assist on my wagoneer, I did a little write up on it that may be useful to some of you. I figure a lot of you run D44 fronts and bigger steering boxes, so it might be of interest.....

BTW - This is actually a REALLY easy mod when you get down into it. Tapping the steering box can sound like magic the way some people explain it but once I had a clue what I was doing, things went really smoothly. Operation is kick ass too, I can turn on rocks with one finger....

Nice writeup.. We did this same thing to Donzi's SJ last year.. And it is super strong.. I have seen him get down in a hole with the tires cut all the way to one side and very easily turn the tires straight and drive out..

    I was very impressed..

I think we welded his tabs in different spots but it has been about 6 months since I even saw his rig... Since he moved....

Looking at the picture in the write-up, I can't figure out if this is hydro assist or full hydraulic. I don't see a drag link, only the ram and tie rod. Is that just me?

The drag link is in front and is parallel to the axle. The tie rod is rearward of the drag link. Look closely at the first and last picture in step 11.

glad this is proving useful. I'm debating getting rid of the rig in question, but if I keep it, i'm going full-hydro. I'm maxing out the joints on the drag-link and screwing up the box. It's leaking like crazy.....

What part of the box is the leak coming from? sector shaft area or where it is ported for a line? Mine was leaking like a siv this weekend and it turned out to just be an o-ring.

I know this is an older post, but could copy and paste the write-up over to this forum. The one you listed doesn't work now!

My friend wants to run a hydro-assist setup on his Chevy and neither of us know enough about it

    Thanks,
    Dave
