Couple of questions Chad, but first, I love that cage.

Now, did you build the box dimensions for a specific reason? I mean, is there a reason you left a certain amount of space on the sides open or built to that height? (obviously you didn't want to go over the seat backs)

Any specific tools, parts, or recovery gear you had to fit? I ask because I saw the Safari cargo boxes in a Rubicon Express catalog a while back, and loved the idea (just not enough to pay over $600 for it). Then, when I started designing one myself, I ran into all kinds of considerations I never even dreamed of before. (ie where to put a spare axle shaft, what order is the stuff going to go in - biggest first or least used first?, Do I want it to ba all drawer - 1 or 2?, Do I want a hatch towards the back seat?)

Also - How do you like the Power Tank? How much use can you get out of it? Like how many tires can you fill, or can you possibly use air tools? If you could do it again, whould you still go that route or go to a full OBA setup?

Thanks for letting me pick your brain for a minute.

3 seats: 2 front, 1 rear on the pass side. I am going to bob it and tube behind the rear doors, so I'll need tool and spare parts storage so one seat has to go.

Power tank is not a power tank. It is an aluminum tank from marinedepot.com. And a fixed 130 lb regulator. Works great. Fills up tires for three runs and still allows me to use air tools.

Box is built to the dimesions to fit in the area and still open. Cost me on sheet of 1/2" mdf and a day to build. Cheap and effective.

Keep up the good work, Chad. And keep on posting photos of what you are doing. I like the approach you are taking to building your Grand. And I'm continuing to get good ideas from you. So keep on sharing them with us.

I'm even starting to like the all-red interior. Not enough to copy it. So I will be staying with mine. But I am getting used to it.

And if anyone has a problem with an all-red interior on a Grand that's as well-built as yours ... then THEY have a problem ... not YOU.

I like the idea of the tank... did you save a lot of cash going that direction? And where do you get it filled?

I see one on this site for 220 bucks including the regulator.. seems like a pretty good deal.

Thanks for the kudos Jim. I just question people for their focus on the red interior and not the things that hard work have gone into. Like the bumpers, cage, long arms and all the other crap. People nit pick. I know its the internet, and I am over it. ------> Moving on.

If you like the subtle build so far. Close your eyes for the next stage.... 14b, d60, d300 and TUBE. And I am keeping the red interior dash and some plastic. And just to make you all happy red PRP seats.

 Hey - Don't they make a red Herculiner or Durabak spray in / roll in bed liner?
Hell - it beats black any day of the week - esp if the suns shining.

Anyway - thanks for the cargo box and tank info. I've got another completely unrelated question for you that I came up with last night:

I keep looking at the skid you built for your 8.8 - It seems like its almost a requirement with the big lip on the bottom of the diff. Did you just weld yours to the diff or is it removable? If you could do it again would you do anything differently? I was thinking about just having a piece of plate welded to the bottom of the diff housing (either by preheating and MIGing it, or just paying someone to stick or TIG it on there.)

Is there any benefit to making it bolt-on / removable that I'm missing?

That is a truss for the rear upper links. Not a skid.

Hank, just hit it with the grinder a bit to knock the edge down on the lip. Not sure how far you can go, as I haven't done it yet, but that's my plans.

If you grind too much here is what happens.

We still have not figured out what to do to fix it.

    Looks awesome Chad!!!

I look forward to seeing how you handle the cage now. Do you have any plans to tie it into the roof? Ahhh.... so many questions, I'll just sit back and stay tuned.

    Keep up the good work!

Not sure yet if I will tie it into the roof. May just wait till I roll it and then cut the roof off.

I have more wind noise than anything. But Dave and I originally tied the cage into the pillers when we first built it.

Man, everyone is completely kicking my ass progress wise. My basement renovation project and school are seriously occupying my time lately, it's depressing.

I'm starting to wonder when I'll get to work on mine, or if it'll be one of those lawn ornaments until I'm over the hill.
