Someone PLEASE talk me out of it.
I still have a lot of parts, some extended ORGS track bars, a winch, and my mig welder to build bumpers. Starting to think 2G for a ZJ and another 2G in tires/BB and some time would get me to a lot of the camping/wheeling I miss, and start teaching my boy how to work on things. Hmmmmm.....
I'd rather have a frame, but I'm not dropping much money on a nice Jeep until the kids are out of diapers. And 4 kids is a lot of diapers.
You have 4 kids?! When do you expect to find a free millisecond of time to work on a Jeep?
Do it!!!!
4 kids in diapers?
better idea, spend the jeep money on a vasectomy
Lol! Sudz has a good point. As well as ELLLLIOTTTT about finding time. I have a hard time finding time with one kid, but I also don't have a usable garage space at home, either. (Its occupied by another project.)
Oth, around here you can find decent ZJs for under a grand. Biggest thing to watch for is rust. Counting the money I recouped from selling my stock wheels and tires I don't think I have a grand (no pun intended) into my lift and wheels and tires. I have spent money elsewhere to get my $375 ZJ up to snuff, but it makes me feel better knowing how much of it has been rebuilt, at this point. And the salvage yards are littered with them, so small stuff is easy to find cheap.
In the end none of us are really helping you! The only problem I see is where you're going to put 4 kids in a ZJ, along with your wife. So I guess you need to buy 2, his and her's, right?

I've run a business in one of the most unpredictable and high-stress industries around for 17 years. It's prepared me for kids and time management with them well
They're at 1, 2, 4, and a 4th on the way. My oldest is 4 and already interested in how things work, so if we're talking maintaining a 5.9 and just a BB and the usual small expedition rig, it'd be good father/son time and no some huge project. I've been slowly unpacking my tools and installing new shop lights in preparation of something, just not sure of what yet!
A 5.9 would be a fun vehicle, and since my only car is a turbo sonata right now, I could use a winter vehicle anyway. Hmmm I might start hunting...
Haha, my wife can't stand wheeling unless she's driving, so really our long term plan is two 4 door wranglers, but I don't want to wait for the 5-10 years away that plan is. We're still in the mini van zone right now, so no dropping the coin on that until a few major changes happen, namely the kids are out of car seats and we don't want the van any more.
DO IT, you miss all the normal ZJ shenanigans... I have 2 kids and totally understand the lack of time and money. I have a ton of NEW parts just waiting in the garage for install. for example I sold my ZJ HID retrofit kit and all related parts to Kraqa and it was good to see him actually build it and get it working =)
I just got a new 199980zj a few months back from a friend. mmy plan is to do very little modification to it. lights, maybe a hiigh flow intake.
i have no intention to lift it, or really mod it out for off roading. just some various general upgrades as it is my winter DD and hunting ri
i
so.....did ya?
Nope! Ended up with a 2021 Rubicon as my DD, love it. I wheel lighter than I used to so it's been great for fun with the kids / camping trips / pulling the small-ish camper. 6 speeds fun too.
That said, every time I see a ZJ, I'm like... I want to build it![]()
