I was using a pry bar, which worked great on the one side. I'll be removing all the arms to replace bushings, and such, when I do my axle swap, so it will give me a clear shot to try that, or other means. I did my BB install at work on a lift, so the whole thing was up in the air. I try not to do too much weight jacking on the lift. Had I been doing one end at a time on stands, that method makes a lot of sense.

Lookin good man!
How'd the stereo go? I've done the deck and front speakers in mine, but I'm a bit old school and still listen to FM radio a lot. My reception with the aftermarket unit sucks...

Stereo was a piece of cake. Think I only broke a couple of the door clips. Added a couple 10's and an amp I had laying around as well. Still need to spend some time tweaking all the settings but it sounds a helluva lot better than it did before.
Detailed it yesterday too. Not perfect, but looks a lot better than it did before. Also took the Typhoon out for a spin.

Been driving the niner a lot lately and it's doing pretty well. It's leaking some type of fluid that's causing a smell while I drive it, seems to be coming from the pass side of the block. But no fluid is making it to the ground so I'm not sure what exactly it is.
But the 249 is definitely about done. The viscous coupler is seizing up pretty good so I'm going to start looking for a 231. Already found a 231 ZJ bezel on eBay that should be here in a few days. Need to pull the current case to find the input shaft length and then start yard hunting.
Wicked
Is it a burning fluid smell?

I noticed a touch from my 4.0L today for the first time, definitely oil. The rear main is starting to leak a fair amount. (What!? @ almost 180k miles!? LOL!)
But this is not a 4.0, so I'd look to the back of the valve covers. Most likely leak to wind up on the exhaust and in the cabin.

Front end was a little worn. Ball joints and hubs were old, may have been original. Got the pass side done tonight, going to tackle the driver tomorrow. Put new brakes in as well. The old ones didnt look terrible, but while I'm in there I might as well do it.
You'll notice I have valve cover gaskets in my parts pile too. Pretty sure my leak is at least partially the pass side gasket leaking onto the exhaust manifold.
Need to pull the front driveshaft too. The VC is SHOT.

Want a 249? Got one
Going t-case hunting on Saturday. I'd prefer a 231, but would take a 242 if it's laying on the ground already. Hoping to get it in before the snow starts flying and I'm running out of weekends to get to the yard AND get all of the other projects done. Truck needs some light maintenance, JK is getting a whole new suspension, and have a few parts for the ZJ as well. Going to be spending a lot of time in the shop.
5.9 is doing well overall too. I've been driving it to work 3-4 days a week and haven't had any real issues. The power steering pump still doesn't feel quite right, but the a/c worked great over the summer. If it's been sitting for more than a few hours it takes a bit to actually start, seems like a fuel delivery issue to me. If I crank it for a few seconds, stop, then crank again it will fire right up. It's never given me any fits on the 2nd attempt so I haven't made it a high priority.
Had an interesting thing happen in traffic a couple weeks ago though. I was listening to Power Supply (old school bass music) and really pushing my stereo at a stoplight and the CEL came on. Dash voltmeter was as far left as it can go. Jeep was still running and the stereo was still hitting (although not quite as hard). Turned the music down and revved the engine and the voltmeter came right back up. That seems more like a battery issue to me, the alternator only has a couple thousand miles on it, battery is unknown. The stereo isn't THAT powerful either, factory Infinity amp and a 300w JBL pushing the subs.
Try cycling the key one or two times on those hot days/starts before you crank it. I bet the check valve in the pump is failing and letting the fuel drain back out of the line. I've been having a similar issue with my BMW, I think it's time for a pump.
As for the stereo/cel issue, my 94 kicked a cel for a battery over temp code when the alternator was failing and it was pulling hard on the battery. May be the battery, may be the grounds. Did you notice any dimming or fluctuations of the gauges when the bass would hit? I haven't had a system in a vehicle in quite a few years, but still remember the symptoms.

FYI, I have a new chain for a 231 you can have if your're planing a rebuild.
I ordered a 1.25" wide chain and they sent me a standard 1" by mistake. Resent the correct order and let me keep the 1" wide one.
Found what I assume is an XJ/ZJ 242, a WJ 242, and a KJ 231. The 231 had the wrong front output yoke and then fill/drain plugs looked like they were seized in the case, otherwise it was in great shape. The XJ/ZJ 242 looked good, but was missing the drain/fill plugs. Pulled the drain plugs from the WJ 242 and brought it home. Didn't even have to crawl around on the ground. Found a ZJ 242 bezel as well. Also found a 2wd ZJ there, hadn't seen one of those in a long time. Also had some fun playing with K2's new tactical pen and some glass . . . .
