Hey guys, so the vehicle in question is a 87 Comanche, but this applies to any axle in general. I have a D44 in the rear that is locked (seems like a spool) and I want to put an open diff (or LSD) in there for DD. Speaking of, which is better? She will see some offroad, but mainly will be a DD. Currently the axle has 307 gears and i want to keep it that way. All I want done is to be able to do corners so the gears can stay the same. How hard is it to actually do it if you have never done this in the garage. Id rather do it myself to save money, but if its too complicated can take to a shop. I need to find an open carrier too or an LSD (anyone selling?) probably off of the junkyard
Any help would be appreciated
Depends on what's in there now. If it's a mini-spool or lunchbox locker, you pull that out and put spider gears back in. If it's a full spool or full case locker like a Detroit, then you would need a new carrier and would want to run a gear pattern with the new carrier, you may need to adjust the shims to achieve a proper pattern. That will involve tools you likely don't have.
Do i need to check the bearing preload? I am not changing put the pinion, so i dont see the need for that
