Grand Slam West is a relatively informal event put on entirely by a group of volunteers and is completely non-profit. However, there are some costs associated with putting on an event like this. There are basically 3 different entities that we have to pay to hold Grand Slam West in Moab. First off is the BLM. Because they do consider our event "organized" we are required to submit permit applications, post-event reports, and comply with their fee structure, which is based on user-days during the event. The BLM also requires us to carry an insurance policy for the event. Not for personal injury, vehicular damage, or anything along those lines, but to protect the land. This is typically the largest chunk of our event's expense. Lastly, the State of Utah has placed a lot of public land into what they call the School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA). Basically, we are granted easements on these lands due to the existing roads on them, however they get a piece of the pie as well to help fund their program. SITLA land parcels are dotted all over the Moab area, and can often times be auctioned off to help fund state programs. If you're familiar with Area BFE, it actually came about as a part of one of those auctions as a group of wheelers wanted to keep that area open to the public.

Ideally, we could keep Grand Slam West as a free event. However, to be good stewards of our public lands, we must play by the rules and that comes with a price tag. We understand the costs associated with attending, gas, food, lodging, broken parts, etc, but hope that you see value in the registration fee.

To make this event as affordable as possible, we use exclusively volunteers as organizers, and no one takes any financial gain from the many hours we spend. We keep the cost as low as possible, and try to budget as accurately as possible to avoid any excess costs to the attendees.

We look forward to seeing you in Moab!

FYI Easter Jeep Safari charges you $50 per trail you run, to cover their expenses. GSW is $40 for the entire 4 days of wheeling. I would say that is very affordable!
