Just finished this up for a friend and thought i would share. I had not wanted it to be as heavy as it turned out but my plasma doesn't do pretty circles and i hate using hole saws everywhere.

Started with a Claytons bracket and a d44a. I tried to talk him into doing half tons but he was already set on using these. The truss is bolted onto the top of the pumpkin and welded to the sides. 1/4 top and 3/16 sides. Skid plate is bolt on so that when this thing grenades he can at least sell the skid and cover. Also made the skid long enough to be a pinion guard and its 1/4 thick.

Nice work! It does seem like overkill for a 44a and the time and effort would have been better spent on a 1/2 ton set up at minimum, but if this is what your friend wanted, he's ending up with a pretty hefty axle.

    Nice work!

any chance he needs some 4:56 gears? I'm getting rid of a set and a 44a open carrier

Thanks guys. I have already had a few request to build the skid plates.

I think he already has gears and i know he has a locker for it but i will check.

Have you considered having the front of the skid bolt to the truss instead of around the pinion housing? I know there is one other 44a skid available that just bolts around the tubes and pinion but I'd still feel iffy about putting a ton of weight on that pinion housing should I have to drag my ass over something

Could i have, yeah probably. is it needed? I don't see why. The rear end could be hacked up from the pumpkin now that it is trussed. The skid contacts the pumpkin in 2 spots and shares 3 bolts with the diff cover. A few struts to the truss would be a stronger setup don't get me wrong, but that takes away from being bolt on which was the intention of the skid.
