They scanned the bar code on my door and said full time 4wd. I explained the new T-case, new axle with hubs and was told no. I even tried a second emission facility. So now I get tested in 2 high with four little tires in the awd lane
Remove the bar code?
I did a coolant flush and fill. It was LOADED with black mold type crap, so I changed my heater core hoses, they are original as far as I know, but they seemed fine. I also cut my Ford Taurus fan shroud at the top and added some sheet metal to get better coverage for the fan. Finished tie downs on the trailer and put on new lights. We put a power steering pump in the tow rig and did an oil change along with the fuel filter. I may add a spray/mist system to the front to help with cooling. Not a priority as I think the new coolant and shroud will help a ton. My ac doesn't work so I won't be adding that heat.
EDIT: While my idea is easier than Dave's, his will look cooler!
In my case the guy took my word for it. Of course I do have a stock 242 and no idea if there would be an issue if I had swapped my Tcase and told him otherwise. I did see scan my door after I handed him the keys.
I am still amazed at how close I am with tire size to fitting their machine. Anyway, best thing to do is try and do the drive by tests for a 2-6 months before your two years is up. From what I understand they need two passes in that time frame. However not in all cases do you passes register properly on their mobile machines. So do as many as practical but on different days.
They tried to tell me that my Grand had two wheel drive last year. I wanted to use the AWD lane & they wouldn't let me. LOL. Go figure. If I still had the 249, there would have been blood. They would have tried to test it on the 2 wheel drive roller. :O
Wow, it seems to be easier in Cali to get mine smogged; they go off what the vehicle originally came with. In my case, a 249 even though I now have the Atlas II. No rollers, just the cables in the tailpipe and other visual checks. Have had it done twice now.
Oh, BTW, Rick, Julia, Rex (the killer dog) and I arrived in Moab yesterday afternoon - 11 hour drive this year. A front is moving through today, so we might not get out too far. Rick needs to change out his fan clutch, which wouldn't come on until 3000 rpms, but still did ok on the way. The WK2 got 27.5 mpg on the only fill up at St. George; still have a half tank left. Great to be here again!
Made it to moab. Anyone up for drinks tonight?
