I have a 242 that worked great for 10 years but now when I put it in any type of the 4 wheel drive options, it wont engage the front drive shaft.
If I leave my hubs unlocked and put the case in 4wd ft or pt or low I can spin the front shaft freely. Sometimes it trys to lock and if it does the slightest bit of pressure will pop it out.
Took the case apart and found this heap of metal on the magnet. the shift forks looks straight to me and seem to operate correctly when i shift and watch the forks move. The inside smells horrible like burnt fluid, and some of the gears on the differential are black. The last pic with the red circle around it also looks concerning, I assume this hole is not suppose to be there?
Thoughts or suggestions on what to look for or what you think is wrong is appreciated. First time I have taken this apart.
The front fell off.
You already circled it. Time for another new-to-you t-case.
as always appreciate the help Indy. I see the differential is not suppose to be like that after searching around online for other pics. As for the 4wd not engaging tho, could that be shift for related? because its my understanding that dif does not spin unless its in full time correct?
I was trying to but yes looks like I better start searching for a new to me case.
So, nice video it is,a bundle of thanks for sharing with us on this board.

So swap it out and get on with your life, they are under $100 from most junkyards. And if you post asking which 242 to replace it with then there really is no hope....
do i replace it with a 21 or 23 spline 242?
forgot about this thread. I ended up replacing just the diff, threw in a new chain and bolted it back up in time for a thanksgiving day trip.
Not to hijack but fpkites video, every time I see it I marvel at the fact that someone actually makes the US politicians look good at least for a few minutes.
