Thanks to Adam, this is the photo I'm starting with for this year's design:
    Name: Twisted1.jpg
Views: 323
Size: 21.8 KB

I'd like to extract the highlights or outlines from the image which I'd print in a different, complementary color. I don't have the tools or skills to do that - is there anyone that can help out with this?

The image will be printed in a single-color "grayscale" (probably more like red rock red), with highlights in a complementary color.

I might be able to do something with it.

Do you want to give it a go and post up your results? If you have any other ideas on how to make the design more interesting using using a complimentary color, have at it. (I want to stay away from full-color this year, so looking to use 2 or maybe 3 colors.) And, thanks in advance!

I like the coloring in your first picture, now we have to get a second color in there. Do you have the tools and skills to do the following?
    1. Isolate the tires, make them charcoal?
    2. Identify the outlines (line tracing?) probably as an overlay or second layer, make those charcoal also?

Great work Jeremia! I like the bottom image best. Can you do the following?
    1. Add a few more outlines (like you did in the first image of this set)
    2. Remove the sky (set to transparent or white) in the upper left and the two little bits in the undercarriage.
    3. Somewhere (I'll let you choose the location) add the following words: 16th Annual Grand Slam West, Moab, Utah. June 6-9.

Shouldn't he be doing this on a high-res image? Or is that high enough to go on a shirt?

A few years ago, I used www.befunky.com to "inkify" an image for the GSSE shirt. There are a whole bunch of configurable filters, etc you can use with zero knowledge of Photoshop or the like.

The interface is pretty straightforward (if you don't know what something does, just try it since you can always undo it) and you can do something like this in a few clicks (this pic has been "inkified" then I put a "warmer" filter on it). There is also an option for a "color filter" to change the basic color more to your liking. There are slider bars for most things that so you can control "how much" of that effect to do.

Thanks for the intro to BeFunky SirFuego. I played around with the program and came up with several designs I really liked. Anyone like or hate any of the following designs?

By the way, I'll be expanding the T Shirt colors this year to include Sky Blue, Steel Blue and Pistachio (light-medium earthy green). I won't be offering black.

3 is pretty sweet. Some of them lose too much detail in the tires, but 3 looks good.

Go for it! Remember I'm looking for a monotone look so the printer doesn't have to use 5 colors to print the design.

I wonder if 3 or 4 can be done in an orange color and black (grey to darken the orange color in areas). But orange is yellow and red so that would be a three color.

Hmmm, if you're trying to replicate my #3 design (which seems to be the most popular) - maybe I should just get the high-res file from you and take over? I think yours needs a bit less detail, more orange or red, more emphasis on black highlights and deletion of the background.
