i've been thinking on how to do my TC skid and i'm still heavily considering doing UHMW to try to save a little weight since this is on the street more then the trails.
now for using plate to support the UHMW i'd need 3/16" plate to go along with the 1/2" UHMW. now if i used dimples on something like 1/8" steel could i do that instead of 1/4" plate? i'm guessing 1/16" dimpled is too thin to do this aswell?
and does the direction of the dimple affect where the strength is?

Check out Pearce's build thread on here. He just did this for his YJ.
You can use 1/8" dimpled laminated with a second sheet of 1/8" and 1/2" uhmw and be fine. Direction of the dimples should not matter much.
he just did a uhmw skid? was it in the beginning of his thread?
so dimple one sheet then leave the second alone and add all three together?
one thing i should find out, how hot can this material get before it has issues since my cat would be 3/4" away from the metal and if its dimpled and has a dimple near the cat. i'm not 100% sure how hot cats get during operation.

Uhmw will melt if it contacts a muffler or cat. We have one wheeling buddy whose skid puddled when his exhaust worked loose and sat on it.

Btw I run 1/2" uhmw with a 1/4" backing plate on my rig but I think what Pearce did is better. It's stronger and it weighs a bit less.
ok, sweet cause as of right now with the set up i want to do my cat sits 3/4" away from the metal plate that would back the UHMW.
one last question, if the steel backing set up is super strong and doesn't bend unless you jump the thing and land on a rock. why do you have to go so thick on the UHMW? for the comp guys who do KOH i can see that but for what wheelin i'm use to its more slow speeds so if it gets high centered or just drags it shouldn't need 1/2"

I used 3/16" plate as backer and 3/4" UHMW and still get deformation. But it slides like a prom night queen !
i use 5/8" with tube backing on 12" centers on the buggy with little to do deformation
