We're going to be building a shop next spring, and I would LOVE to have a lift, I just don't think the garage will be big enough for a full blown permanent 2 post. If I put the lift in the middle, I won't be able to fit 2 cars in there, and if I put it off to the side it will make it cramped working on a vehicle on or off the lift.
So I was perusing GarageJournal and found this: http://www.maxjaxusa.com/
I could set the mounting points in the middle, and have full room to work on major projects where the lift would be beneficial, but then I could just unbolt the lift and move it out of the way when I wanted to keep 2 cars in there or do work where I don't want the lift in the way. It's rated to 6k lbs, which my ZJ is certainly under. I haven't used a lift before, would there be anything with Clayton's that would make it tricky to put the ZJ on the lift? I would need to do something to keep the suspension from just drooping out, but that's easy enough.
It would suck not being able to put my F250 on the lift, but any other projects I have in mind are all <5k lbs, so I think this would work pretty well for me.
That looks really cool. I have seen portable lifts before, but that one is semi-permenant and looks way more functional than the truely portable ones.
Only problem i see with a portable is you take it down then when a project comes along or something minor you will spend more time setting up then if you just layed on the ground and did it. Can you not put a lift outside?
Build a bigger shop lol
Would love to have a nice 1000+ sq ft shop, just not possible out here. We're on .23 acres, and that's on the VERY high end of lot size for metro Denver, anything bigger has an HOA that doesn't allow the shop or is 45+ minutes away from everything. The shop will end up being probably 24x30 or so, but not quite big enough for a permanent lift with everything else I want to be able to do in there.
Ah yea I see your problem now I'm on 3 acres so I don't think like that haha
I like it, if only I were a bit shorter...
I work on a lift almost every day and that looks like it would be fine for break jobs ect on cars but does not go high enough to work on anthing underneath and with a lifted Jeep it it would lift it even less
I have to agree with this statement. It would be more comfortable laying beneath a lifted Jeep than squatting beneath it while on that lift. The only way I could see that really being helpful is if there were a pit or recessed area of the floor within which you could stand. Judging from those pictures, even an oil change would break your back.
Circling back to this as they're breaking ground on the shop hopefully this week. I need to play around with it a bit, but my thought is that if I can fit comfortably under a vehicle 4' off the ground on a stool or chair, I should be good. I don't think I'll be able to sit up straight or the stool height would have to be super low. But the full size lifts only lift a vehicle a little over 6', so at 6'5" I'd smash my forehead on the rocker panel everytime anyways.
