I just aquired a gasless mig as a gift. Is it possible to make clean welds without gas on a mig or do they always look like boogers? I havent even fired it up yet but not sure of any tips on makin clean welds. I'm used to ARC and making clean welds with that and just chip off the slag.

surface prep is your friend on a flux core welder... get everything very clean and v-notch your joints and you'll be good to go- there are a lot of rigs built with flux core only that hold up just fine.. you'll have a slag layer after your weld similar to arc welding

I've built almost my whole Jeep just using flux core. Yes, prep is the key, go slow and concentrate on making nice deep welds. Clean off the slag with a slag hammer, wire brush and/or wire wheel on the grinder.

just like wheeling it's as much about the operator as the machine.

flux core is perfectly fine. like trey said just clean well and do a good job laying your beads and you're fine. Flux gets super hot compared to MIG so in certain cases you are better off using it than solid wire and shielding gas, particularly with 110v. Plus you can weld in a 50mph headwind as long as you can keep your hat on

Don't forget that the polarity for MIG and fluxcore is opposite. IIFC torch is negative for gasless.

I have welded my entire build with flux-core wire or ARC.

Seems like flux core is cheaper to right? No gas tank to maintain.

The flux wire is a bit more $, and the only maintenance the tank really needs is to be refilled depending on your usage and a pressure test every 10 years or so if you bought the tank as opposed to leasing it.
