I understand the difference between the two. My question is whether or not the Detroit is worth double the cost for a rig that sees only a couple thousand street miles a year. Yes I know the 8.8 carrier is a weak point but I don't see that really being an issue on 33s or even 35s. I'm about to pull the trigger on one of the two and I'm trying to talk myself out of the Detroit

In my experience my detroits have been a lot less noticeable in noise and in locking up, just overall smoother though I never had any performance issues with the aussie in my D44a. Are you planning a regear or anything at the same time? Installing a full detroit might need a little shim work at the carrier bearings where the aussie is drop in.
Basically I do like my Detroits more overall, though the aussie always got the job done
aussie is good for stock gears or a little better once you get in to the steeper gears they begin to fail. I had 3.73 gears or close to that and worked great for a year, first trip out on 5.13 gears it began to fail.
Gears are 4.56s behind a well built 4.0. Looks like I'm going with the Detroit. What's the best place to get them from? Cheapest I've found is around $590 for a 31 spline 8.8

yeah ive really been thinking about pulling the trigger on a full case locker for my 8.8
For the sake of curiosity, have you looked at the yukon locker from Randys? It is my understanding that they offer a lifetime guarentee. It is an extra cost, but still less than the detroit. I am still researching my future 9 inch build. Thinking 4.86/4.88.
link? i cant seem to find it
Me either. I think he may have been talking about the zip locker but Randy's doesn't even list one for the 8.8, and they aren't cheaper than Detroits. I'm pretty sure I'm going with the Detroit, this is the best price I've found.

man id love to have a full case locker but then its going to take me longer to build the axles up if i do, im thinking lunchbox lockers front and rear
Detroits have a history of blowing up when a shaft breaks. Aussies not so much.
I don't know exactly why it happens, but the recoil from the shaft breaking is supposedly what takes out Detroits.
I ran an Aussie in my 8.8 (4.10 gears) on 35s and 36s without issue. Unless you plan to go bigger, I personally don't see the carrier being much of a weak point with the Aussie.
i plan to stick with 35s for a while, maybe get a set 37 inch military tires and H1 wheels since they are pretty cheap
I have been running an Aussie in my 8.8 for a couple years now. It has been trouble free, but I have always been worried about the carrier, since that seems to be the weak point. I am runnign 4.88s as well. I just picked up a used detroit for $300, so I will be swapping it in soon. I figured for that price, peace of mind of not having the carrier break was worth it.
I'm guessing he's talking about the Grizzly they are yukons answer to the Detroit and a damn good one lifetime warranty and stronger!I'm building a set of mog9s for my LJ I'll be running them front and rear unless by some miracle they release a zip for a 9" and then prob just stick with the grizzlys.
I think the Aussie is quieter and less quircky than the detroit. My personal preference. And if the Aussie breaks pins it is only 5 bucks. Compare that to a detroit.
Two year old thread... thanks for your input
