I have discovered the plasma cutter!

The one I used belongs to a friend, it is a thermal dynamics cutmaster 42. That sums up my hands on experience. I want one.

In short, I want your reviews. There were some old threads on here but the plasma cutters have come leaps and bounds in recent years and I am hopeing that y'all can help me with this most recient daunting decision.

I have found numerous chineese units as low as $300.00 new shipped. On ebay and c-list used +/- 30amp name brand units are $600-$800, and I found a local supplier that will sell me a Hypertherm Powermax 30 with an air drier for $1000 new.

    Any thoughts or opinions??

If I could get a reliable 3 years out of the $300 chineese unit I would be satisfied, but logic dictates, buy a good unit and be happy for life.

What to spend tax returns on. The more I spend on the plasma cutter, the tighter the budget for the winch...

    First, fix your withholding.

I'm happy with the purchase. Still working as of June last year, haven't even needed it since.

Pearce - maybe you could chime in, how is yours holding up?

Mine is working great. The best part about the Longevity I own is I can now get new consumables from Harbor Freight. Way way cheaper than anywhere else. I also double filter my air. Clean air, and the large tip that produces a finer plasma stream works the best. I just cut 1/2" plate last weekend and it was like butter. Let me see if I can find the pics and I'll add them. But again, I have found the key is having a good tip and electrode. When they start to wear out, cutting goes to shit.

    Thanks Guys.

Yours is the older post I previously read. Good to hear your stuff is still working. Surprised nobody else chimed in. I had read some really negative reviews on the cheap-o's on ebay, etc..

With that said, looks like I will be pulling the trigger early next week. Any preference between the Parker and Longevity units?

I was just looking at the current model Longevity stuff for another friend and they appear to have made some nice improvements and I like what they have done. I did have customer service issues with Longevity but it was about what you might expect considering the price. I bought mine through a Pirate4x4 dealer but would probably go right through their site instead. But you can research at Pirate to see which brand seems to do better. But as far as the product goes it's like anything electrical, either it's going to work or not. After that, maintain it well. From my little experience with them the higher quality ones you can abuse more before they let you down. So that just goes back to take care of your equipment.

I done did it. My 40d should be here in time for the weekend, so I can work on my bumper project without the 50 mile drive to Hudson. What a great excuse for a new tool!!

    Thanks again for the responses.
