Playing with the idea of coming out in the WJ on 32's. Certainly not the kind of wheelin' I used to do there, but I think that my fiance needs to see the insanity she's in for before we get married
This is our 15th Matt so you should definitely make it out. Do the mellower trails so she gets introduced to Moab in a way that would make her want to come back. If she gets scared and craps her pants on an extreme run she's probably not going to be very warm to wheeling or to Moab. Show her the moderate scenic trails where you don't break anything and then the fabulous Moab night life.
Well it looks like GSW is out for me for a couple of years... but it is for a good reason. Kristin and I are trying to build a house, and will need every penny we can get for the down payment, because this would be our first and last house. Next move is to a graveyard or a nursing home.
She's beeing all nerdy and blogging it: http://projectbold.blogspot.com/
I'd love to, but a flight is at least another $200 towards our end-goal of a 165k down payment, EVERY penny will count. I'm even cutting out my daily $1.89 coffee from Sheetz - that in itself is another $1100 by the time we need the down payment. You'd be amazed at how little trips and things add up when you start tracking them in Quicken - I ditched XM radio and my gym membership - another $1400 towards the goal
The house won't bury us as long as we reach our goal for the down payment - our mortgage will be lower than our current 2-mortgages - so GSW after the house will be a go!
Matt, we'll look forward to seeing you whenever you can make it.
Oh wait. You have $16.50 in there! I thought $100k was your goal :P
Actually we raised the goal, after a slightly lower mortgage rate, compensating for closing costs... and... building a garage that is literally the size of my current house. It would be about 1400 sq feet of garage. We're not sure if the HOA would approve the plans, but I'm going to try. 4 bay garage, 2 of which would be super deep (motorcycle, quads, tools, etc.)
Hahaha gotcha. Well that sounds like one kick ass garage!
Elliot LOL - big as my current house (the garage) too - its nuts but we're doing this once and being done.
We actually set out with "lots of land, no HOA" in our heads. We love the school district and will have kids here, though, and the HOA in its current plan is pretty cool, and dues are very low. My plan is simply to infiltrate and take it over so that I can pary buggies in the front yard... http://www.newburymarket.com/ is where we are building. Good school district is simply a requirement (she's a teacher) and the location is perfect. But beyond that, business wise, we're planning on moving my bussinesses office when the lease is up to be part of this development in the market, or at least build the building nearby. It is a great way to be involved with the community there.
c'mon matt, slap a few magnetic signs on the side of the rig and write it off as a business trip
Thought has crossed my mind, if I knew the penalties wouldn't kill me I might! I will be buying a truck for the business to move server racks around, I'll probably be able to use it to tow with for personal use to some extent.
So if someone from GSW says that they are interested in you hosting their website and want to discuss it in person at Moab, that's not a justified business trip?
Heck, give a little business presentation for Echo Systems at the GSW dinner thingy and the trip just turned into an advertising expense. Or you could just be a "sponsor", too...

This is where folks don't think about small business ownership with the whole "Oh you can just write that off, thing." - everything written off is simply money you are not TAXED on, it is also, however, money you cannot pay the owner(s), keep as net profit, or put back into the business.
So if anyone comes across a winning lottery ticket, let me know and I'll head out
Matt, you've inspired me. Looks like GSW is out for me as well. I'm saving for a down payment on a house of my own and trying to squeeze every penny. Unfortunately it is really expensive to make the haul to Moab from Seattle and based on what it cost last year I'd be saving 2k all together for food, gas and lodging for two. Man this sucks, up until last night cutting GSW wasn't even an option, but the more I think about it, it's sacrifices like this that will allow me to purchase a home by my goal of six months.
However; I'm not building my dream home, I have zero intention of staying in Seattle long term. I just hate the fact that I'm flushing $1400/month down the drain for rent, which I will never see a return on. I want to buy a fixer-upper. I have all the tools necessary to renovate a home and one of my buddies from college just got a job up here at my company so he will probably live with us for a couple of years. Buy while the market is low, gut it, fix it up and sell it in a couple of years when I move back to California. That's the plan at least.
