I've had this idea bouncing around in my head for a long time now. why has no one tried to make rear trailing arms on a ZJ?
you would need a short. CO's and bypasses btu i'm sure they could be fit in there.
Honestly...I love the idea. I'm all for it, and have contemplated going that route with my WJ. The most beautiful part about the setup in a grand cherokee...you could build the setup/corresponding cage to go directly behind the rear seats, make everything as compact against the seat as possible so you still maintain almost all cargo space unlike you do axle mounted coilover setups that come through the floorboards in the middle of your cargo space. Another bonus is all the vertical stress from the coilover would be placed directly on the C pillar hoop, a pretty ideal place to disperse loads!
For high speed, I can see the advantage of trailing arms -- more travel (and more tunability with the bypass shocks).
Do they offer any advantages for crawling? Trailing arms and bypass shocks were basically never used in our sport until the Ultra4 craze started...
The advantage is that you can widen out the links closer to the tires, mounting the CO’s on the links makes them mount wider and therefore can be much more stable. Because they are mounted in front of the tire you can mount them wide and not risk the tires scrubbing them. You can go with a shorter CO and get the same amount of travel which is cheaper.
You don’t need to have Bypass’s and CO’s. you could just do CO’s for wheeling.
I woud love to see this done! I see the benefits being fairy limited field wise...but i say go for it.
Any updates on what you chose to do?
bump
i dont own a Z anymore. .....so i havent done anything. i just thought i would pose the question.
