Im in the market for a new helmet as im tired of borrowing my friends shit. So what's everyone using and what are some good options around. $100 or so?
I had a cornwell that shit the bed after about 3 years. Honestly after that I just bought the $20 lincoln one that home depot and lowes sells. Much less hassle and when it gets too fubar'd from overhead welding I'll chuck it and get a new one. Much simpler and better for the eyes imo.
you also might want to take into consideration an auto darkener, and your lens darkness, too light and your eyes get fucked (ask me how i figured that one out) but too dark and you cant see shit.
auto darkeners help take care of this, and you can get them fairly cheap.
i have one from HF thats lasted me for 3 years now, i got it http://www.harborfreight.com/catalog...sult?q=helmets just an idea.
I have the HF one with the flames on it. I've had it for several years and I would not go back to one that isn't auto-darkening. I've used it when putting on my long arms and doing my rocker replacement among other projects.
Auto dark all the way.
another vote for auto darkening.
Ken I have used the one you have and really liked it. I will for sure be getting an auto dark helmet just looking for good options and personal favorites.
I use one similar to this: http://store.cyberweld.com/miweheprohos3.html
The adjustable shade level is really nice. Only thing I don't like about it is having to manually turn it on every once in a while. If you don't use it for 10 minutes or so it will automatically turn off and then you have to just hit the on button again and you're good. Can't count how many times I've started without turning it on though.
i use the one you get from harbor freight, it works fine for welding here and there.
Alot of us have this one from northern tool. $50, auto-darkening, fast and slow response, 9-13 shade control, decent helmet but cheap enough to replace as needed.
I have the Harbor Freight (auto dark) one that has held up great for the last 3 years using it professionally. I just replace the lens protector every now and then. One note on the auto darkening ones; they don't work real well from certain angles. I have also used one that cost about $400 and same issue. I just keep a standard hood around for those times
Man get your self a good helmet, you only have 1 set of eyes, I used the cheap auto dark helmets and they do work, but once you use a good helmet you will chuck the cheap one, I got myself a Miller and man what a differance, it have a varaibly shade and has a grinder setting, has warrany and you can get replacement lenses and shit for it, the miller also has more sensors to pick up the flash so it darkens faster then the cheaper ones.
Dels I beg to differ but the northern helmet recommendation came off a thread from weldworld and recommended by professional tired of spending big bucks.
Thanks for the useless bump on a dead thread! Eat shit noob!
