Just curious how many of you have taken your dd to GSW. I've been twice with mine now and broke something both times. I want a tow rig in the future but the ZJ is all I have for now.
I attended a few events when my ZJ was my primary vehicle. I busted the side and spider gears in my D30 on Cliffhanger and the next year it was a buggy. Never again will I drive the vehicle I wheel in Moab to Moab.
My WJ was my DD when I took it back in ...06 I think? I took out a PS pump and radiator fan that trip haha. Tow rig for me fasho
tow rigs & trailers break down too, just ask matt
Probably driven a rig we wheeled in Moab to Moab 10 times or so. Several breaks in there, but only one warranted a ride back on a trailer and realistically we could've fixed it in Moab if we had to. If it's your DD just wheel it like it's your DD.
never GSW but me and my brother jon just drove his zj 6 hours from new york to virginia for GSE(big dogs)wheeled it and drove it home 6 hours and had a mess of problems,so now 7.3 diesel tow rig bought last week
Drove it last year and didn't break anything. Towed it this year and broke it.
This was my fifth GSW and the first time my ZJ was not my DD. I drove it out the first 2 years and towed the last 3. I busted a radiator the second year and drove it home and a drive shaft this year and it was drivable thanks to Ryan.
I've done both. My rig isn't my DD, but I drove it this year. Last year I towed it, which was nice until the hub on the trailer froze and ripped the tire off of the trailer. Then I drove it the jeep home and had a friend pull the trailer dry.
I usually lead the difficult trails so if I had my choice I would tow, but I'd rather drive and take the risk than not go at all.
Yup. Out of 10 GSW's I've been to in Moab, I can only think of 2 rigs that weren't able to make it back home easily. (Keith's WJ after bending the 35 and Mike Moore's ZJ after the steering box took out the steering pump and a few other things) With what we put our rigs through out there, it should be expected to turn a couple wrenches during the trip. I've been extremely lucky with mine not having broken anything in a while, but I've also been running the same identical setup for a long time too, so the kinks are all worked out now.
I make the long treacherous journey out there in my Jeep the 3 years I've been there. Haven't broken anything serious. I would prefer to tow it, but I agree with Cody, I'm not going to miss GSW, just because I cant tow my jeep out there. When I am home it is my DD...
Also, rig + tow rig + trailer = 3 wheeled things that can have problems. How many people have towed out and have had problems with truck and/or trailer? My guess is a lot of them.
3 times the wheels = 3 times the maintenence too. While it is extremely nice to kick back in a comfy tow rig going 75mph with the a/c on no problem, it is more work and considerably more money. You can fix a lot of driveshafts and brake lines for even just the cost of a trailer.
I would put the tow rig decision more on your local wheeling than a once-a-year trip to Moab. Most of the trails I run in CO are 2+ hours from my house, so that was a major consideration for me.
My WK is my daily driver. I came through GSW 2010 with only minor issues and then broke an axle on West Rim the next week. Fun times.
When you truly love something, you make the sacrifice....
Yeah I've pretty much decided that all of you who think I need a better axle to run bigger tires must be wrong, I'm leaving the lp30, 249, and 35 in and just putting 40's on it and calling it good.
My ZJ was my wife's DD for 03 & 04, then my DD until 10, I still drive it to Moab and back for each trip along w/doing the trails. Since I live close I figure I can always arrange something to get my rig home if I have major issues so my situation isn't the same as others. However, I can't really justify another set of plates to pay for and more insurance for the three or four trips a year.
6 GSW trips, 7 overall Moab wheeling trips and never broke anything. If you break out there you are doing something seriously wrong
Oh wait, I ripped apart my control arms (Teraflex) a few years ago. That doesn't count though since an hour later everything was better
First few trips to GSW my Grand was my daily driver. It's not anymore, but I don't trailer it, that's part of the challenge/fun.
Not only have I driven my DD out to GSW and back, but both times it was just after significant changes. The first time was 1 week after I completed swapping the entire drivetrain. So far, knock on wood, I haven't broken anything I couldn't fix while I was there. Just wheel a little bit more conservatively know that if you pancake your roof, you might be going home in a convertible
