Agree, down turns suck or blow. I run straight pipe from the CAT to the back. That made it jsut as quite as running a FM muffer that I just kept banging on the rocks.
What size tubing are you using now?
2.5" throughout.
And you're still getting a lot of resonance inside the cab? Hmmm....I'd say the only thing you may want to add is a resonator after the muffler then, but that usually just quiets down the tone outside the cab, the closer you put one to the engine, the more it helps with inside resonance/drone.
So it's just 2.5" all the way from the y-pipe back? I believe stock is 2.25" right? Does it step back down to 2.25" anywhere after a 2.5" section?
Stock is 2.5" to the cat, then 2.25" from there back. My setup is 2.5" the whole length. I used to run 2.5" with a FM70 and it sounded great. That muffler is ~8 times bigger than the Hushpower II muffler though so it doesn't fit with Claytons
Yep, no room for a big muffler with Clayton's and the little muffler I tried really didn't do anything except get hit on the rocks.
I like the sound of my V8.
Yeah, a resonator would probably help a lot of your resonance since the Hushpower doesn't have near as much packing in it as the 70 did.
With this conversation, I'm starting to think I should just have a shop run pipe from the cat to the back of the rig. I really need to make a decision since I'm running just the cat right now. We cut off the muffler back for the Claytons. It's loud, but not nearly as bad as I suspected it would be.
For me it isn't bad 4-wheeling, it is bad on a 6 hour drive to Moab, or driving around town. If you have a DD & a trailer I wouldn't mind running a turn down.
I'd like the exhaust going out the back - gets the gases away from the back seat where my most precious cargo sits....Tricia if she's not in the front seat, and Bridget if Tricia is up there.
That, and if I have to do a dyno smog test again, I don't have to bring dryer hose
Run it out the back. Makes a huge difference in the sound level compared to a turn down and yep, points the gases in the correct direction.
I'm running out of things to do. Wait, still a few items on the list.
Well now that I have a reservation at the Moab Rim RV Campark (made this morning), the only thing left is to load the camper with food, clean the KOH dust/sand out of the air filter on the jeep so I can start a new collection of Red Utah Dust and head down the road.
Moab Red Dust is > any other dust. Except maybe Peruvian sand dune dust, but I have never been there, just pictures in motorcycle mags.
Well my Jeep now has the IRO OTK steering and KOR front tow points installed....which was quite cool since Im in North Dakota, and my Jeep is in Colorado...hehe, it also got an alignment. Whis really only leaves a little work on the fron bumper, and my AC condenser installed (both of which might happen before I get home), then basic maint/service...
Side Note! Anyone still needing a room at Redstone?
got a good list of things to do on the jeep (which is cool that I can do them this year!) as following:
build 8.8 and get it in
install new lca's
get the tires on the correct rims (this just shows how much I have been wheeling) XdoneX
full service on fluids (grease oil etc,,.)
trans filter and fluid change XdoneX
locate a freaking trailer!!!
service tow rig brakes.
and maybe more that I can't think of...

Well....I got the Jeep mostly ready. Heading to Moab this weekend for Memorial with the family. We'll see if that brings any more changes that need to be made if I make it to GSW.
Claytons are done, just have to pipe the exhaust out the back.
BPEs installed - thanks for the great deal last year Ken (K2). When I dropped the 30 to put brackets on, I forgot to put bumpstops back in - they're in there now.
Adjusting the front trackbar turned into quite the ordeal - ended up having to use penetrating oil and heat to get it to adjust. Now it's got a shit-ton of anti-seize
Passenger slider got some flap disk love and some paint. I'll do the driver side this week. Both sides have some pretty good cancer. I'll have to drop them both this winter and clean them up, maybe even send them to a sandblaster.
Just need to make another fluid check, then it'll be on the trailer June 6th or 7th.
I'm thinking real hard about getting limiting straps for the rear. Not too keen on using my shocks as limiters. Especially since I was able to squeeze my front coils out to put in the hockey pucks without disconnecting the shocks.
I do need to figure out why my front discos were such a whore to get off the post. Front trackbar might be a little bit on the long side.
Only took a year to get Claytons in, Jim.
A year and a month...almost exactly
New thermostat is in and seems to be working good. Cleaned a shit load of crap out of the fins of the a/c condencer, radiator, and from between the trans cooler and a/c condenser. Much better now!

ABS pump is out and new brake lines are in. I also put a longer serpentine belt on so the adjustment pulley doesn't hit the steering box. I removed the rear track bar bracket (body side) so it doesn't hit my exhaust!
Next weekend is 4 front arms and new springs front and rear. Probably some spacers for the front wheels. Hopefully I can get the rear shocks relocated too.
