Cool post Bill, thanks for that, really informative video. The last red top I had went over 6 years before needing replacement.

I have just purchased one of these batteries as well. For now, the battery is to be used for audio applications in my 04field grand prix. It really was appealing to me as it has agm technology, a gel not dry cell, and its price was fair. I was going to purchase a yellow top optima, but I've read bad reviews on their quality as of lately. I will put this battery through abuse with my 1600 W system as see how it holds up after a month or so and write a full review. I have all wiring upgraded under hood to 0 gauge and there is a everstart marine battery in the trunk as well.

Thanks for taking the time to post here optima bill! I have a yellow top thats a few years old, I took it out of my mustang before I sold it and it sat around for a long time and now its deader than a doornail. I've tried to revive it in the past using the method you showed. It'll take a charge but as soon as you take the charger off it the voltage drops quickly! I put a multimeter on it and it went from 11.5V down to 9 in probably 30 seconds. I don't have my original reciept (I bought it at advanced auto parts and they only have records for up to 2 years) and I'm just wondering if there is any way I could get it replaced?

Edit- just saw how old this post was, probably not going to get a response

I have managed to beat the crap out of my optimas. Cycled so deep they wouldnt register on a meter. Charged on my battery tender then dropped back in without issue.

    heymaker,
Your Optima should have had a 3 yearwarranty. You said it was a few years old? Over 3? Just as aexplaination here, when you took that battery out of the mustang, ifyou knew you were going to let it sit around, it is always a greatidea to fully charge it before storing it. Werecommend batteries always maintain at least 12.4 volts (about 20%discharged). When voltage drops below this level, sulfationbegins to occur, which will reduce a battery’s performance andlifespan. If you still have the battery, try charging it at 10amps for a couple hours, keeping a close check on it to be sure itdoesn't get hot to the touch. This could break up the sulfation. Thencharge it overnight or until it is fully charged. Then see what thevoltage is 24 hours later. You never know, but I have seen similarbatteries recharge and be fine.
    Thanks,

I need it today. They have a DL Plat in stock and a DL Gold in stock. Is the DL plat still made by Deka/East Penn?

Interstate- they also have an over-size that fits with winter 850 CCA.

Too late. Also Interstate is manufactured by JC, who as we know has had some issues with batteries

if the 8 year warranty is pro-rata, don't take that as an indication of quality. Pro-rata is usually the means by which companies continue to earn revenue and profit and boast of their captive market LOL!

So far I have been replacing my Sears die hards with Interstate. So far no complaints and lots of CCA's for a decent price.

Just bought an Odysey battery yesterday to replace my red top (which I was able to squeeze around 6 years from). Let's see how Odysey fairs.
