so Autozone has a new battery out

the Duralast Platinum with AGM technology

as far as i can tell.. these are the exact same battery as the Diehard Platinum but at a cheaper price

i returned my Optima Yellowtop today for the 4rth time ( optima are crap now ) and decided to go a different route and try one of these Duralast Platinum sealed batterys

    anyone used one of these?

they have same CCA as optima yellowtop, better CA, made in america by Johnson Controls ( same as exide and diehard )

ill report back with how i like it

( oh ... and they gave me $200 back for returning my yellowtop and the new battery was only $140 ! so bonus there )

I have the Die Hard Platinum and love it. It's made by Oddysey. Not sure about the Duralast Platinum. Do some googling and see what you can dig up for info.

Johnson Controls bought Optima from Gates.

    Johnson Controls is Interstate.

Exide SUCKS. They lost the contract with both sears, and NAPA. I also think they lost O'reiley's and Checkers.

Johnson controls bought Delphi and shut down the plant to get the AC Delco label. AC Delco is no longer maintnence free, no more Delco eye.

Deka is the only US manufacturer of maintenance free batteries. They have an AGM battery called the Intimdtator and it is the only AGM battery that comes in a group 65. Deka makes Carquest, Federated, Some Napa batteries(E. of Colorado), and some others.

All they managed to tell me and all i figured out was that the new platinum battery fresh on the market. Not too many stores have it, none im El Paso Texas actually, and yes they are Johnson Controls; the makers of optima. The Duralast brand did get closer to the Optima in terms of quality, but I also heard Optima quality went down ...

I take it that we wouldn't be so lucky that this battery also happens to be the same (or similar) shape as optimas, too? I can't seem to find any pics of this battery online yet.

Just asking on behalf of the folks that have an Optima-specific box.

My current Optima Red is dead because I forgot to unhook it when the Robot went back into the garage. It's not the first time I've done it, so (while I haven't tried yet) I'm not too sure whether it will charge or not, so I may be in the market for a new battery.

It's not that Exide sucks, it's the customer's specifications that make the batteries suck. And that's a problem with most of the private branded batteries. To be able to make them at such a low price point that places like O'Reiley's and Walmart demand, there are going to be corners cut. The expensive Exide agricultural batteries are still some of the best ones out there (as are the ones made by Interstate (JC) and Deka).

And FWIW, Odyssey batteries are made by Enersys.

I've stopped buying expensive batteries. I've been going to the local Interstate dealer and buy blems for $25 (no labels, no warranty). I've yet to have one fail.

Matt, my 4-5 year old Yellow Top is shot so I'll be needing a new battery before I can go wheeling. Do you have a part # for your battery? Can't seem to find it on AZ's website.

Instead of looking at labels you might want to look at their website

I picked one up over the weekend. Definitely not the same battery as the sears diehard platinum. This battery is make by Deka, same battery as the "deka intimidator".

As a follow up, O'rielly Auto (checker) also carries the same Deka Intimidator rebranded battery. I've also read that Napa, Carquest and Batteries plus has it too. The one at O'rielly comes with a better warranty that Autozone's so I might switch (since I haven't installed it yet.) 84mo prorated with first 3 year replacement vs. just a straight 3 year.

I'm running two Exide's in my Jeep. Bought at Canadian Tire branded as the Eliminator but they look just like the Exide Orbital they used to have. Been working good for about 3 years now. Thats with lots of park time and the main battery going dead cause I don't unhook it. Always bounces back.

Before that I had a Optima red top. Bought it used and got about 2years out of it. Not sure how old it was when I got it so I cann't complain.

When I was working for the zone( AKA autozone ) A store manager called optima about the battery life and quality and how poor it was due to so many returns from customers and fellow workers using them in there jeeps. As hearing this 2nd hand he told me " these batterys are 2nd grade or 2nd line and the quality is not as good " that being said I've ran my yellow top for almost 3 yrs and until letting it site from feb-till current it was good. But now its time to replace so I am planning to try the new duralast platinum also. From what I have heard these still haven't become popular in many stores so it will take me awhile to track one down and have it sent in.

That's odd, I've gotten 3 used Optimas free from the core pile because they "didn't work". My current one is a yellow top, two red tops, and I still have my red top duralast from 2009. I've noticed that a really slow charge will usually bring back an Optima.

    Hi Matt,
Sorry to hear about your issues withyour YellowTops. I am curious, how much time has passed between your first battery replacement and your fifth? Four batteries in a row going bad is very unusual.
Optima is also owned by Johnson Controls. Johnson Controls produces many brands of batteries, both well-known names and private labels. However, Optima brand is produced in our own factory and no other batteries are produced there. Optima doesn't private label any other AGM type batteries.
There are numerous U.S. manufacturers of “maintenance-free” batteries, but even “maintenance-free” batteries require proper voltage maintenance and some companies void their warranty if their battery is discharged below their low voltage standard.

Rodd88 is correct. We have batteries returned as “dead” or “bad” from retailers all the time. Truth is, many are simply deeply-discharged and need proper recharging. This video shows how to recharge a deeply-discharged Optima battery.

I have been an Optima customer long before becoming a spokesperson and have both RedTops and YellowTops, depending on the application in most of my personal vehicles. I have experienced parasitic drains on a couple of my hotrods that sit for extended periods of time, but have never had to return one for replacement.

I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions about our products, feel free to ask.
    Thanks,
    Bill Howell
