Hey guys a man local to me is selling off some some stuff and I saw this D44 on there and it caught my eye. I do not know much about the J10 axles and was wondering if this would be a worth while uprade, If all i would have to do is burn the mounts on and get a bp adapter? I'm wanting to regear my 8.8 anyways so ratio isn't to important unless the carrier on this thing will not accept 4.88's. Just a few words of wisdom is all I'm looking for.
Heres the add. 7th pic dowm
early '80's J10 D44 front axle- ~64" WMS, everything is there, just not together. Driver's drop. $100

The d300 and novak twin kit would be good for 200$, but its not in the cards right now.
That's the same axle I have under my WJ. The carrier break on 44's is 3.73 down and 3.92 up. I would guess it has the lower (3.73) carrier in it right now, but in the same post he said he has a 3.92 carrier for $30.
It's a good low pinion axle, but it's what...6" wider than your rear end? Mine measured 64.5". I mean 1.5" wheel spacers would get ya close, but that seems pretty different.
*EDIT* lmao not quick enough haha. When considering an HP44 make sure you're going to have enough room to squeeze the pinion up that high with how much lift you have, just to make sure. I also got myself flat tops so I could do hi-steer, but that's a hell of a price for that axle.
It's the same thing as a Waggy front end. The carrier split is 3.73 down, 3.92 up
Geez alot of posts popped up while I was doing homework lol
Yea its way wider I do not recall what my d30 WMS is? Anyone know offhand? I have 10" wheels with beadlocks so really like 11" with 3.75 bs and 1.5 spacers on front and 2" on the back, my trailer is only 83" wide so I have to be less than that i'm at 82" right now.
Keep the info coming I might pounce on this after some negotiating.

A wj is something like 63", a Z/X/TJ is 61 I beleive
Dam it would be perfect if I didnt need wheel adapter/spacers
I'm betting it wouldn't be to hard to convert the front bolt pattern
The guy wants a 100$ for axle 30$ for the carrier I need and 100$ for new bearings, rotors, hubs and all other odds and ends. he is moving and was clearing out his shops so I offered my truck, trailer, and labor for one day helping him in exchange for parts mentioned and he said thats sounds like a deal he would strongly consider......So we will see how it works out.. If it comes through I will be PUMPED!
Awesome nothin like the barter system lol.
Haha SHAKE AND BAKE!
Therangerstation.com has a good tech article on these I was just reading. Looks like the pattern will have to be 5 x 5.5 though using jy parts. Early 80s F100s were 5 x 4.5 but I beleive 2wd only. I'm not sure if the 2wd TTB stuff swaps to 4x4
No, they are Twin I beam, which the TTB is designed off from. At the end of the beams, is a knuckle and spindle, it may or may not fit a 44's c, I don't know like - said. It occurs to me though, that even if it did, the spindle wouldn't be bored for a shaft to pass through anyway.
Which takes us back to converting to 5.5, easy in the front, and easy in the rear.
I used a wide trac waggy axle for my D44 build which is pretty similar to a J10. You can swap out the outer knuckles from any other D44 to get the brakes, bolt pattern and high steer setup of your choice.
For my build I went with outer knuckles from a '81 to '93 Dodge D44. This will allow either a 5 on 5 or 8 bolt wheel pattern and all Dodge knuckles in this year range are flat top. No need to find the rare chevy knuckles and then mix and match the Ford parts to get a 5 bolt pattern.
Downside it that there is no aftermarket support for the Dodge stuff so you are stuck using the Dodge single piston brakes. However they are adequate for stopping the 36" tires on my rig. Just got back from Moab and they stopped me on every downhill descent I tried.
Thanks for the info Clay. I decided to stick with the waggy stuff and sell my beadlocks and just run regular 6 lug steelies with adapters on the rear.
