That rear axle is... interesting... Did you weld the old tubes onto the new axle? If so, I hope there's at least a long, very tight-fitting sleeve in tubes. A bigger truss would be a VERY good idea.

No we chopped the old ends off the iron d44 and then cut my tubes off the D44a and then welded them back together with a sleeve inside each. Width is factory and all of the factory stuff still works including abs and parking brake, uses factory D44 WJ axle shafts.

Chase's team at East Coast Gears did the work, might length the truss at some point but I think it is pretty strong, the truss is welded right at the splice and the rear cover is attached tothe truss as well so it should not be going anywhere.

it is just the casting flash from where it was made.

just double checked and it is the casting flash leftover from being made. No cracks.

Theres a Sleeve inside the tubes? how does that work with the oiling of the outer bearings? And why did you choose to put the trans temp gauge in the return line?

the oil level is higher now with the new rear cover, the oil is above the half way mark i the diff so plenty of oil tothe bearings

Well I put the temp gauge in the return ine before I got a bung welded into the tranny pan, just left it after I got it welded.

Well I have decided to build me own bumper.

Here are the beginnings of it. It is the basic frame waiting on the tire swing pieces to come then I am going to box it all in with 12 ga steel.

will add more as I progress, waiting on the kit now.

Tire Carrier Swingout Component Builders Kit

    added swing arm pivot

    base swing arm

    closure

    a little style

    side closed in

    top plate

    angled back under

    started boxing top in

    top of side box

    tire mount add

    gusseted

still more work to do but got a lot done, need to do a lot of welding and a few more pieces to fill in gaps around door and fenders.

I think the bumper is done, will take it off, add a few welds from the back side, weld up all the seams and the grind and paint.

I also think I am going to order a CO2 tank bracket and mount it on the drivers side for carrying my CO2 tank.

Add a cross bar that fits really tight and nice between the top of the receiver and the bottom of the horizontal bars I welded to the side of the hitch receiver mounting plats. I think it will nicely add to the strength, also may add a couple of verticals between it and the main cross piece once it is off for finishing.

Hopefully will be able to finish it up over holiday closure at work, then it is clayton time.

To each his own. It doesn't look like you wheel it very hard and doubt it will drag on a speed bump so whatever.

you guys are tougher than my wife, I do wheel it, not as often as I would like because of other family interests, but it does get beat on a few times a year, hopefully more this coming year as I stepped down as scoutmaster of my son's troop.

had not thought about it being there in an accident, might reconsider or make it removeable for only when I am on the trail.

I do agree with jeeptech01, it seems a little bulky, like a fat woman who had lypo everywhere except her ass. You might want to move up the tire mount as well
