Pam and I each took Friday off for her birthday and took a 3-day weekend up to Holy Cross.

Our campsite for the weekend, off the exit road

    This sign is no joke

    The first real obstacle

And then French Creek. We got to the creek around 11:30, by the time we go through, up to the City, and back through the creek (maybe 1-1.5 miles total distance) it was 6:30.

There were a lot of rigs up there, and it seemed like the obstacle changed after each rig went through.

About 15 seconds before this picture was taken the guy in the jeans and black shirt could've stood under the front driver tire.

Interesting carnage here, from what I could gather he stripped the splines out on his steering column.

After watching a few rigs go through it was our turn, and I had a line picked out, there's only about 11,000 different ways to go through the Creek.

Everything was going great until a little past this picture.

The front driver kept falling in the mud puddle and not getting any traction, while the back was trying to climb a large rock. The LCA's were also keeping the rear tires from really getting to the rock, so we had to take a strap here but we were about 6" from making it.

Still a line of rigs behind us

More interesting carnage. I've seen a lot of bent tie rods, but Jon actually managed to get his tie rod stuck under the diff.

And our final destination, Holy Cross City. Approximately 300 people lived here in the early 1880's.

Back down at the creek, even more rigs waiting in line now than before.

Some of the guys coming up were awesome and let us leap frog them so we could get back down across the creek.

flexing it up a little on the way back down

We tried really hard to capture the view from this spot, but the lighting just wasn't right.

Saw this on the way back down and lol'd a little bit

Ran into a lot of people I haven't seen in a while up there this weekend, and got to meet some new people as well. Amazingly we made it out with no carnage to speak of.

Oh, and if you know a guy who drives a buggy with red Liberty skins with Colorado plate 221-THL, please kick him in the nuts.

Basically he has no patience at all and was trying to drive completely off trail and down the creek 20-30 yards to get around everybody. Enough people started yelling at him that he didn't go through with it, but he still went far enough off trail to cause some damage.

I think I remember that view spot, all the old abandoned iron mining equipment to the left?

Very Cool, would like to have been there. It looks like plenty of camping before the trail head??

I just dropped off my WJ at Cory's to get the front axle swap done. I want to run HC this summer after my axle is done.

Sweet. Crossing the creek always seems to take hours...
I'd love to run HC on a Monday after camping the night before. Any takers?

I like the idea. Give me a couple weeks after my axle is done and I have a grip on my schedule.
