Who all is staying at these cabins? My passenger Dan, and myself will be there.
Also wondering how the whole parking/trailers thing is going to work out. I have never been there, but I think Ryan said it might get tight up there.
If it gets too crowded, there are some free park/unload lots on the side of the road on the way to the trail that are at least semi-secure...
Are your tow rigs 4wd? I've heard that hill is fairly steep and loose.
The hill is steep. Last year when I had trouble (in my 2wd dually) it had rained really hard earlier that day and washed gravel onto the pavement, and it was still wet. Once things dried up I didn't have any problems.
I'm staying there with Joe (Slim616) and Mandy. We have a spot available if anyone wants to be able to SHOWER and have a CLEAN BATHROOM everday
My tow rig has 4HI and 4LO if needed. I'll probably just put it in 4HI from the get go once I get to the hill.
How is cell service down there by the cabins?
Cell service is hit and miss - at least it was for me last year. Verizon BTW. However, the locals seemed to be getting service. I tried the trick (and forget what buttons to push) where you can reset your phone to local towers but it didn't seem to help me at all.
Ryan, you staying at the cabins for GSSE?
I will be there with my girlfriend Lee as my passenger (she will drive half the time) and Duke with his Geo Tracker. We will be in cabin # 2.
What time is everyone planning on getting there Thursday?
Using google maps directions, it says I'll be there by 6:30, but between the hills, piss breaks, and the fact that I don't usually tow faster than the speed limit, I'm going to guess it'll be closer to 7:30. Hoping to get there before 8 so I can get my permit.
I'm not sure which cabin I'll be in, but just look for the robot. My cell is for won too ate feyve feyve cero cero tree tree. If anyone wants to meet up on Thursday, a text might be easier if cell service is sketchy (I have Verizon). I'll probably text or call Slim616, Trey, and/or Cam if I'm running significantly late.
EDIT: If the parking at the cabin sites is full, is it at least going to be easy to check in and turn around to park where Cam mentioned? Or would it be about as inconvenient to turn around like it was at the cabin in Windrock?

i plan to be at the campground at 8 or 8:30, depends when i can leave work..
im going to have a table set up for everyone to sign in and hang out for a while.. won't be hard to miss so you pansies should come down to the campground after you get your tampons changed..
Did some searching and it looks like Verizon gets service in Harlan, but not Evarts. There is a site I found where people report about their cell coverage. Verizon averaged 1/5 bars in Evarts, AT&T averaged 0/5 bars and AllTell averaged 5/5. So I'm guessing the locals have AllTell
you'll be surprised at the number of people in evarts that have their cellphone stuck to their head.. its kinda nice.
there are a few spots up in the trail system that have cell service, middle rock garden has enough service to text but not get a call out... upper rock garden (can opener) has enough service to make and recieve calls.. as for the town of evarts forget about it..
The free parking areas provided by the town are relatively large and flat, although they are all 1/2 mile from the cabins at best. they'd really only be good for worst case scenario...
I'll hopefully be rolling in at 10:45. my haul to harlan is far from short but after doing it so many times, I've got it down to a single stop. If I clatter over the bridge before midnight, it means traffic was decent and no tires blew out. either way we will show up ready to crack a beer and hang out.
Fairly inconvenient. There is a small turnaround circle that goes around a large rock. There may be more room at the top of the campground. I stayed at the cabin in the middle (2nd "level") so I don't know what is up there. You won't get stuck and with 4wd you'll be fine.
Edit - Link google earth map. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie....64,0,47.512,0The Chevron is right next to the road. The entry to the campground (behind Chevron) is across from the church and around the brown roofed house. It looks like there is plenty of turn around room and parking near the top area where they cleared. The image may be old too so they may have made more room. ???
Haha I'll be down there after I unload the Jeep. Should get into Evarts around 7-7:30. I'd like to unload in the daylight if possible. BTW - I hope it rains on you and your man tent.

[QUOTE=ATL ZJ;289758] If I clatter over the bridge QUOTE]
Would not be u if it didnt sound like a fright train crashing.
Is this the correct route to get to the campground y'all are staying at (which I'm assuming is also where I can get my permit)?

EDIT: Posted a more accurate link.

no, the campground is just across the creek off KY-38. so instead of turning left, you would go straight another 50-100 yards and the campground is on the right behind the dairy hut. the end of your route is the approximately the correct location for buying permits though... another 1/4 mile up the road is the permit "shack"

So is this one more accurate?

I'm hoping to roll in the cabins around 7 or 8 pm. pm me if you need my cell phone. Nextel is really hit or miss once i get off of 81. Also if worse comes to worse I there was a little room at the camp ground behind the dairy shack (from what i saw last year) if some one needs to park a trailer.
my group is staying on the other side of the mountain at these cabins
