Fuck. Well, Its a bit late now, I may get the fox sliders later, and get different spring lengths, if my setup bothers me too much.
I had plans of getting some coil wraps though, that could definitely keep the grit out of the slider and springs.
I'm looking for some silicon or other type foam rubber to insulate the mounts for my radiator, any idea where to get some that is cheaper than Mcmaster?
I was thinking of going CHEAP and using thick inner tube rubber, not sure how that would stand up to the heat though.
I cut up my stock ZJ donut spare for its rubber to use for stuff like that... Worked for a while but now I run some 1" thick stuff from mcmaster.
If you are looking for quality cut-to-fit material of a certain durometer, that will hold up over time, it's hard to beat mcmaster.
I just placed the order. Getting 3/8" silicon foam rubber. Also ordered a rod of UHMW. I'll be making a pair of sliders that wont make noise on the CO. I have a lathe, so why not.
Already have tripple rate setup. The sliders will go in the trash if the UHMW sliders work like I suspect they will.
Here are some facts about UHMW
Characteristics:
- The highest abrasion resistance
- Outstanding impact strength even at low temperatures
- Excellent sliding material due to low coefficient of friction
- Self-lubricating
- Easily machined with common woodworking tools
All those characteristics make it sound ideal for this application, I'm sure the Nylatron is just about the same, but may be easier to cast or is cheaper. just speculation.
Seems like people have talked with FOA about the sticky sliders, and nothing has changed, I did a bit of searching, and there are quite a few people bitching about squeaky sliders, one resolution, the guy made sliders from UHMW, said it worked fine and no more squeaking for him.
Nylatron spec, 7th column from the left: http://www.machinist-materials.com/c...r_plastics.htm
Not sure if they are correct.
Wow, the two materials don't really compare. Very different numbers across the board.
A very quick search shows this for D4020 standard UHMW polyethylene specs.
I think I should have gone with the Nylon plastic. Higher coefficient of friction, higher impact resistance. The Rockwell hardness is greater for the Nylon as well.
Although, the FOA slider looks like a nylon plastic to me (I'm not a plastic expert though haha)
There are a ton of different Nylatron's, filled, lubricated, impact modified, mono cast, glass filled, It would help to know what the shock companies use. I'm going to guess they are cast.
Some of the cast materials don't come in a bigger than 2" OD. I would look at the GSM or the GSM Blue. I have seen both used in the 4x4 world. In fact I have the two materials in slider form on one shock.

You want something impact resistant because it is hitting the slider stop. This is a feature of nylons which Nylatron is.
Looks like Nylatron GSM or GSM Blue to me.
The one thing I like of the sliders I have on my shocks is that the ID tapers wider at the ends slightly. Looks like they are the same ID all the way through. Turn down the ends. The center of mine are tight against the shock and I have never had an issue in the four years.

Here's how I left it tonight, long day.
LOOKIN BADDASS!! Coming along really well and I love you stinger design. Keep up the good work
Holy SHIT Niel that front end is looking fawking badass. The tubework on those fenders is damn impressive!
Thanks guys!
It's turning out about how I envisioned it, and I think I am really going to enjoy having the narrow front end, for tight winding trails, and parking lots.
I just keep looking at the rest of the jeep, and it really doesn't match the front, it looks like a buggy in the front, and a minivan in the back haha. Thinking of calling it the "silver mullet", business in the front, party in the back.
So....you'll be attending GSW '11 then correct?
awesome name Neil and maybe its time to make a full buggy ?
Barring any unforeseen problems, I should be able to attend.
I would kill for the oportunity to make a full buggy, I need a good drivetrain, a few hundred feet of tube, and a pair of axles and I'd be there. Someday, Someday.
Silver Mullet it is!
