SO i didn't plan on getting a ZJ this soon. But last night i found this jem for 400$. 1998 5.2L V8. Fully loaded, leather, sunroof, heated seats....you know the bare minumum for a trail wheeler.
So why such a low price???
the guy thought the tranny was cracked.....upon closer inspection it appears to only be a split tranny cooler line.
the parking pin is broken. should be a very easy fix....i just need the parts.
the motor runs like shit. There is no valve noise. I'm suspecting a bad injector/plug/plugwire. We will see after a compression test.
the rear lift gate is missing a pin on one hinge. (almost a deal breaker, hhahaha....Riiight)
Heated seats don't turn on. guessing a relay or a fuse.
the truck has an inspection notice. no big deal. cost is 100$ and it will for sure pass.
So i know i've talked about doing a full very detailed build...but that plan was only suppose to start once I sold my current place and got a garage. Well this deal came up and my place doesn't go up for sale for another couple months. so for now it's gettinng some of the parts from my previouse ZJ. The goal is to fix everything and get it running perfect. If i have to do head work then i might consider doing a cam while i'm at it.
then i wana fit 33's at stock height and put it into trail/camping wheeler and DD. durign which time build some armore for it.
I saw it on craigls list last night at 9pm and had it picked up by a friend by 10pm. I have no pics since i got it but this was the one used in his add.
really lookngn forward to fabbin on one of these again.
kewl

SWEET! welcome back to the ZJ's
I'm looking forward to this!
well i just spoke with my buddy he is dropping the truck off at my shop around 1130 today.
i'll put in a few hours getting it running and assessing the repair work.
and of course post pictures.
Giggity man, your fab is killer...can't wait to see your skills put to work on something that your keeping road worthy also!
Oh this is GONNA be good!!!
niiiice. there must be a "go buy 98 zjs" bug going around.....
can't wait to see what you come up with.
well sorry to dissapoint all.....no pictures.
i got a new bat into her today. that was rad. redid the bat cables since they were so eff'd up it wouldn't charge.
So this is the scoop:
-did a compression test and have 150-160pai accross all cyl except #1. that one has 70PSI. see my thread in driveline if you wana help out with that problem.
-the interior is MINT!
-AC doesn't work. no problem i have a new pump on my self of parts.
-Rear lift gate handle is eff'd. No problem i have one of those left over from the last ZJ.
-Heated seats don't work. i can't find a fuse labeled for them in the fuse panel. and i can't see a relay in the power center under the dash. i will need someone to point me there if possible.
-drivers door hinge is fucked up. i will have to get a new one.
I will be getting an inspection on it this week hopefully. then i can drive it around town. its much niver then the 1990 2wd toyota i'm driving now (the toyota is for my pre runner build)
so all in all i'm super happy. feels weird but really good to be working on a ZJ agian. i felt like a total newb when i couldn't remember where the fuse panel was. DOH!
Shoot some oil in the cylinder, and see if the compression changes. Or switch the injectors around to see if the problem moves to that cylinder.
Seat heaters:
I'm going off a '96 FSM, HTH
CB3 in the junction box at the fr pass kick panel. CB 3 is the top silver one. also feeds power seats
Fuse 12 in the jusction box. 2nd row down, last one on the right (rear of veh.) also feeds HVAC
Fuse 8 in the PDC under the hood. Also feeds starter, PCM, NSS
Fuse 15 in the PDC under the hood. Also feeds turn signals, dome lights, cigar lighter, VIC...
Are you really gonna wheel with heated seats??
i wanted to put heater pads in my corbeaus but never got around to it.
keep in mind 'll be DDing this rig too.
I'll bite. What's a Haaaden? is that somebody's name?
or are you posing as a Bostonian and trying say you want to harden up?
ronnie jones does a parody of Chopper reid. youtube it search "harden the fuck up".
I thought the biggest reason the heated seats stop working the the actual heating element wire breaks somewhere in the seat, so you have to take the covers off, cut the foam to get to the wire, trace the wire to find the break, repair it, and put it all back together. This is exactly why my driver's seat still does not work, because I'm too lazy...
dude that is a nice jeep, i went and took a look at it last week, it was a very good deal, i just didnt have the time to fix it up.
I love that color.
goodluck with this project, its a nice jeep.
so i threw some oil in the cyl..........no change in compression. not even the slightest.
booyaaa!
i'll be pickign up the heads for it thursday hopefully.
Ok. Boring project thread right? I agree. Hopefully this will pick it up a bit in the near future. I'm picking up my heads right meow. Then I'm off to get hydraulic parts to build a bender. So progress shoul be quick and soon.
