Guys I think we might be going a little too rough on him...hey man you might get some better responses here
http://pirate4x4.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=10
fortcollins, that ZJ with the 1ton and 40's how much lift does he have?
and would a D60 in the back be better then a 9''?
you guys are starting to ruin my plans and cost me more money! lol
and id rather you guys be honest with me and tell me whats not going to hold up or work then me build a rig that dosnt work...
Up above, it was stated that it was 7" lift.
Rear dana 60's come stock with 30 spline shafts that are the same diameter and spline count as a dana 44 shaft, 1.31". You can get a rear dana 70 or 14 bolt with 1.5" 35 spline shafts factory. They just weigh a shitton and hang loooow.
Maxx has about 7-7.5" of lift.
Either axle will take some upgrades to be able to hold up to 40's really. A 60 uses the same 30-spline shaft size as a D44 stock, the only real difference is that it is a full-float. Most people upgrade the D60 with 35 spline shafts...which requires you to bore out the spindles in the rear.
A 9" has 31 spline shafts, which are much stronger, but again, for 40's you'd want 35 spline shafts. Plus a nodular third and other upgrades as well. It's pricey.
This is where my 9" build begins.

Damnit Mr. Pancake. You beat me to it haha
Haha i have the lightning quickness.
Somewhere in the final few pages begins my 9" adventure also.

I got lucky as hell though, I got my 9" with claytons brackets, truss, Strange nodular 3rd, detroit and 35 spline shafts for $1200
ok, looks like my plans have changed, but again id rather have the info to build a strong rig.
did all 9''s come with 31 spline axels?
It's OK then we're pretty much even, I spent $200 to regear and a little over $100 for my disc brakes.
I was completely happy with regearing though, it means I have a set of low mileage 5.38's sitting in a box for when the time comes that I'll need them heehee.
No, 9" also came under cars and could be had in the 28 spline variety. There are also different styles of housings, and different wheel bearing styles. Big bearing being used under heavy duty - more worthwhile.
I hate to say this, but honestly if your set on building a truck with huge tires and don't do hard trails where the ground clearance would kill you, building a dana 70 or 14bolt is dirt cheap. You could be in for less than a grand with one of those axles to have similar strength to our 9"s
Haha I'm so dominating you with the quickness right now.
This thread is bugging me...it's had more replies in less time than I've basically ever seen on MC haha.
^^^ Yeah, I'm going outside to work on my truck....
is there a way to tell if its a big bearing unit or 31 spline without taking it apart? sorry for the newb questions but i did homework on the D44's not 9''s lol...
These are the flanges at the end of the housing.

I have the big new style, I believe it has the most aftermarket support also but either big's are better than the small
ok cool thanks. Im going to finish my LA's
Im using the QA1 rock ends, man they are some heavy duty pieces!
Damn, I am popular in this thread!
