I'm working on remote-mounting the receiver for my winch controller box. It seems to me that RTV would be a bit more positive seal than a thin rubber gasket underneath an 18 gauge cover. RTV would be easier to remove than caulk in case I need to remove it.

    Any thoughts?

I'd go with a urethane sealant. Something like windshield sealer. RTV would probably work for a little while but it doesn't seem to last that long.

Clean with brake cleaner, let dry then apply, lasts forever. RTV does not stick well but is a form-able gasket.
