1 minutes on google got me this:

    http://www.jeeptech.com/trans/

Both transmissions are electronically controlled and 4 speeds. I would imagine that as long as the gear ratios are the same and the length was the same then you could do it. I would say look up the gear ratios, length, and bolt pattern. I got you started so I'm going to let you do the rest of the grunt work.

assuming it's a 5.9 ZJ trans, then it should. The truck's/durangos have the starter on the worng side.

Is the TCM on/in the tranny, or is it external? I would think that they'd be different.

    The niner uses a 46re where the 5.2 uses a 44re.

I don't know if its different for dodge vehicles but I read a few threads on other message boards and it looks like the TCM is in the vehicle ECU. Not 100 percent on that but I read people swapping RE's into vehicles with RH's and there was talk about needing different wiring harnesses and computers and what not.

We're not quite talking about re versus rh - Both trannies that the OP is asking about are re.

I'm very interested to hear from somebody with transmission experience -- is transmisson control handled in the engine control stuff, or is it separate? I would assume that the engine control module/unit for the niner is different than the 5.2, so could that mean that there are different connectors and operating parameters? Would you have to put a 5.9 ECU in for the 5.9 tranny to talk to the 5.2 correctly?

It's my understanding (hearsay) that the 46re is stronger than the 44re. Info on a swap would be great.

I know we're talking about re's but the question was raised wondering if the tcm was in the transmission or somewhere else. I was just putting in my 2 cents that I think its external and separate from the transmission based on some information I gathered.

I also have been curious to see if there would be computer issues between the two transmissions.

My apologies - I thought you had made a reference to the rh tranny.

I'm very interested in the difference between the two.

Its all good, I did make a reference to an rh because the post I got my info from was a post about swapping an re for an rh. And that's when they made the point about external electronic making me think the tcm was separate from the transmission. I didn't make that point completely clear.

For OBDII vehicles the ECU controls both the engine and transmission. OBDI vehicles had seperate ECU and TCU modules.
I am not sure if the 44RE and 46RE would talk to each others module or not. Might want to talk to one of the performance transmission shops that deals with both of those transmissions. Level 10 would be a good starting point.

This is partially true, 5.2L OBDI ZJs ('93 - '95) used the 46RH which was hydraulically controlled and only required electronic input for overdrive, the 4.0L used an electronically controlled 42RE as does its OBDII brethren. OBDII ZJs all use an integrated engine and transmission controller as you said but thats not necessarily always true; OBDII XJs with the AW4 have a separate transmission controller.

A quick google search turned up this. Since they both have the same control system and same operating pressure specs, I think its safe to assume the 46RE will work with the 44RE's control system.
