exactally. but im still trying to get it back to wheelable status. i need to gear the front and build another 9". im just broke so it may be a little while. ill try to post up some picture of any updates.
Do you DD this jeep? I'm curious how it handles with the heims on the steering linkages?
yeah its my dd. drive it to class everyday and three and a half hours home sometimes. honestly i was worried about running all heims but i havent had any problems. it works great. occasionaly the one on my pitman arm will squeak alittle bit if i whip it into a parking spot but other than that it's been great. no play or anything. best alternative since i couldn't afford to do high-steer in my opinion.
well finally getting rid of the abortion of a rear axle i bought. got a new 9" with 4.88's and a detroit. glad to have the spool and gear whine gone. ill try to post some pics this weekend after i get it in.
finally got the front axle geared and took it wheelin. went to harlan in ky for spring break and had a blast. everything worked great.
and heres a couple poser pics from the start of mason jar...
looks like mad fun, im pretty pissed I missed it. How was it compared to what everyone says, were there actually a pretty nice variety of trails or were they all pretty tough.
Good to see someone else posting harlan pics on here.
Chavok, the rigs in the pics could have had a good time at harlan (and hope they did). I wouldn't take a stock WK there, but moderately built grands are plenty for most of the trails.
kirby and all them said it was awesesome but thats coming from guys on 40's. but to be honest there was plenty of trails for everything. we hooked up with a club who had everything from buggies to stock yj's with 30" muds. plenty to do up there. alot more than we thought. probalby some of the best wheelin on the east coast, atleast that i've done. We actually ran some of the harder trails like can opener, lower and middle rock garden. looked at mason jar but way to wet the day we went to it. we did around 70 miles of trails and still didn't see half of everything. definitely worth the 5 hour drive up there.
this is a picture of one of the trails in middle rock garden we ran. alot of fun.
You ran can opener?! Or did you bypass the real obstacle?
haha no were didnt actaully run the obstacle. run the rest of it, just went around the main rock. no one could get through it while we were there. i wasnt even gonna try. all i saw was crunched driver side. maybe when i give up on the grocery getter status ill try it. wanna try lions den too but id like to finish my cage first.
from what i've heard about lions den, you're asking for death or at least a fucked up rig at the best
honestly thats what it felt like when we first walked through it but actually a guy in a really clean 2001 tj with on 36's and chromoed d30 ran it and only got a busted door surround and some soft top rips. the drop at the beginning has a really high pucker factor. saw two rigs almost go over coming down it.
yeah the guy that is the manager at 4wp was describing how you drop in a huge ledge and its just a bowl, and theres no turning back and no by passes once you get in there
Yeah the entrance can be a little interesting your first time. Lions Den costs me a dollar of spray paint everytime because I intentionally scrape my cage down the rock on the passenger side to keep from flopping forward/driverside. That said, it's really not nearly as bad as it looks. You have to leave it in 4wd and just be ready to bump it. I think you could winch back out if you absolutely had to.
haha yeah. i told the first two guys i spotted down it to be ready to stomp it if the back end started to go over but they had atlas's in low low so it didn't do anything but rev up. they got lucky. the third guy did what you said and put his cage into the rock and rode it down like that. it was alot more stable than the first two. didn't unload. real interesting to watch.
forgot to post up pics so here are some crappy cell phone ones of the new 9" i built before spring break... the top is 1/4" flat bar and i boxed it in with 1/8". the front side is inset back so the third member can still come on and off. its completely welded and sealded off.
I saw it under the Jeep, looks pretty badass out too. Im gonna have to come over friday and ride around in your ZJ for a little bit. Its been two weeks without mine now and its killing me...
just got back from harlan for GSSE. awesome trip. it was great meeting and wheelin with everyone some pictures are posted in the "GSSE 2009 photo thread".
and yes ronnie, i know....i need to get rid of the spool. but just because im a forestry major doesn't mean i know where money trees are. they are a very elusive species.
