i have been thinking that a 3.9 and a 5 speed out of a 4x4 Dakota would be a great swap into a 5.2 zj. anyone ever hear of this being done?
i think that if you were to get a truck that is the same year as your jeep it should be pretty well bolt in plug and play, whouldnt you think?
If your 5.2s in good running condition why would you want to do this?
not only that, why take a hit on power? If your going to do a swap, do a 5.2 with a manual...probably closer to plug and play with the extra power
its just fine, just compialing information, for future referance. so anyone think it would work well? i had a dakota 2 wheeler the the 3.9 and 5 speed and it was quite peppy even with 245k miles and 31s on the back
ok not to hi jack my own post but what does it intail to swap a 5 speed into a 5.2 zj??
I know 5 speeds came behind 5.2s (I had a buddy with a Dakota that had one), but I'm pretty sure it would be difficult on the ZJs. From what I remember from people on this board talking about it, the starter is on the other side of the belhousing or something, and because of that, making the front driveshaft fit would be hard. I could be wrong, but I know this subject has came up before on the forums. Wouldn't hurt to search...

I would never consider putting a v6 in place of a v8, but that might just be me.
Is your engine or tranny shot or something? You could just put a decent shift kit in your automatic; that would make it feel a little more peppy and be a hell of a lot easier than swapping anything in.
this is not something is want to do i was just wondering if it were possible. and i dont think the a stick has a starter on the other side.
Everything is possible, it just depends how hard you want to work for it.
But I doubt anyone would want to work that hard for a measly Dodge v6.
ok then how hard is it to get a 5 speed in then???
well, it's harder than it is to SEARCH for the answer yourself
eh, what the hell...
to start, you need a (compatible) transmission, bellhousing, clutch, clutch (and probably brake) pedal assembly, shifter, flywheel, pilot bearing, custom crossmember/ mount of some kind, and assuming it bolts up to your transfer case, you'll most likely have to change the length of your driveshafts. Oh, your probably gonna have to cut a new hole in the floor, too.
That's what i've got off the top of my head as far as necessary parts. I'd think you could get a lot of this from a dodge with a 5.2/ 5.9 with a stick, but you're still looking at more $$$ and a shit ton more work than beefing up the auto and making it shift better. I looked into it pretty deeply before deciding to just get the auto rebuilt.
ok I DONT WANT TO DO ANY OF THIS BUT I WAS RESEARCHING AND COULDNT COME UP WITH ANY KINDA OF CONCLUSIVE INFO AS TO WHAT IT INVOLVED. I LIKE TO BE INFORMED. and i did search and didnt find anything solid
LOUD NOISES! WHAT ARE WE YELLING ABOUT? If this was just for shits and giggles, you should have said so.
You asked a question in the Drivetrain section, not chit chat, so I thought you wanted technical information, not "yeah, it'd be kinda hard and probably not worth it."
worst idea ever lmao
You aren't going to find any info on this particular swap because it is so rare. If anyone has ever even done it.
What's the goal/purpose for the Jeep? Daily driver? Rock crawler? drag racer? Manual trannies can be fun and are usually cheaper, more foolproof and easier to maintain. Autos have some major advantages but by design, are more complex and costly. Do you really want a different motor, or do you really want a different transmission? Why?
If you are just looking to get a manual tranmission into your rig, make the jump to a decent size v8 and swap in the whole transmission/tcase as a unit. Such as TBI 350/sm465/205 or similar. That assumes you can figure out motor mounts and you enjoy wiring. If you want something more plug and play, the Jeep 5.9 with associated ECU and trans. really is a great way to go.
No one here is going to spoon feed you instructions on how to do a 100% custom motor and tranny swap into your Jeep. If you enjoy figuring things out on your own, give it a shot. If not, do something more tried and true where people can more closely speak from experience. Not trying to come down hard on you.. that's just how it works.
ok screw it no one reads anything...i just wanted to know if it had ever been done but forget it
You should really try searching:

Read post #27. With that trans he had the starter on the other side...
