    Doing the HP30.

The markings indicate that I need to lower my pinion depth. But I've taken out every shim- now what?

Also, backlash is at 11. Should be 8-10 I believe. There is no adjusting (putting shims in) the sides of the carrier on the 30. On the 8.8 there were plenty of shims to adujust the side to side placement of the carrier- but not on the 30. what gives?

Seems like my only adjustment is the pinion depth and the preload. I'll take a pic of the marking compound tomorrow- maybe that will help in the diagnosis.

You have the right carrier? You can get it pretty close with the wrong one. I learned that one the hard way.

The shims go behind the bearings also on the carrier. They should be there.

I got the carrier from Ted_Z on the board. 3.73 and up carrier.

I didn't replace the carrier bearings. Are you saying there are shims between the carrier bearings and the carrier?

    Pics to come.

Yep, the shims are between the carrier and the bearing. You have to pull the bearing off to get to the shims and then press them back on.

Okay then. That's totally different than it was for the 8.8.

On that the shims were on the outside of the bearing-between the bearings and the case.

Looks like I have some more work ahead of me. Still what do you think about the pattern. I know you need to set backlash first- maybe that will change the pattern. I think it will move the pattern away from the edge and make it look close to acceptable.

Looks to me like the pinion is too close, but like I said I took all the shims out already.

At the top, way on the inside; botton, way on the outside, were those two different test patterns?

yeah, different patterns. The one closest to the camera is how it is now.

Any tricks to getting out a stubborn carrier? Hit the pinion from the back and pop it out?

Stick a crowbar in the carrier to jam it up and then crank on the pinion. The force will walk the carrier right out. I usually have to put a bar on the pinion to do it but it works great.

basically the pinion still rotats the carrier but since the crowbar wont let it turn, it rolls out of the housing instead.

I built a case spreader for the d44, but sounds like what frozen said might work...

I use two short crowbars or tire irons braced against the housing and leveraged against the heads of the ring gear bolts.

Stuff a rag between the ring and pinion and turn the pinion. It'll usually pop the carrier out.

First thing you need to do is set the pinion depth. What is the marking on the pinion head vs the marking on the pinion that came out? Adjust the shims to reflect the difference in numbers and that should be good.

Not sure exactly what you mean. could you elaborate? I've read a lot of write ups. Most say to set back lash correctly first- then adjust pinion depth. But the two effect eachother- so you may have to keep changing both until you get it right.

To me it looks like the pinion is too far in. You need to shim it out a lot.

When you are looking at it from the opposite side as the pinion gear it is backwards. When you rotate the ring gear 180 degrees the pinion gear hits the ring gear 180 off of what it looks like in the pic.

In other words, if you follow the marked pattern around you will see that the pinion is not out far enough.

When assembling or setting up a differential there are four basic adjustments. In the order of importance they are:

    1. Pinion Depth
    2. Pinion Bearing Preload
    3. Backlash
    4. Carrier Bearing Preload
