Looks great Pearce. Any reason you went with the, nut welded inside a tube, seatbelt mount? Didn't Cam do that as well? You guys are the only people I have ever seen do that. Where are you adding gussets?
Well, there was a lot of debate on how I wanted to do that mount. I wasn’t originally going to do it that way because I wanted a double shear tab with removable nut/bolt. But there wasn’t room to put a small post like that and then put a pair of tabs on the front of it to catch the harness tab. So, I did similar to Cam’s style but I made a notched cut on top of the tube so I could then add a second tab on top above the one with the welded nut on the inside. Now the seatbelt tab will be bolted in a double shear condition, though it is still at the top of a tube. Which I think is fine for this kind of use. I’d take a picture of it close up but I think it looks a little ghetto fab, lol. After it’s all painted and the seats are in I’ll take a shot. If I decide I don’t like the V style shoulder harness through the single seat slot I’ll come up with something different.
I’ll do gussets around the halo area in the corners but also to double as roof mounting tabs. I’d never compete with this rig but we’ve been trying to use some of the comp guidelines to assist in the design.
Everyone is making changes for the better to their cages lol. Looks really good man! I'll be doing quite a few things to mine as well this coming weekend, I only wish I could take it out like you. I'm mostly looking to tie my seats into my cage, I'll be using some ideas from here for sure
My favorite thing is how it looks so simple. Almost looks like it should have been fast to build! But we know how much planning went into it to make it come out as good as it did. I only wish the pics made it look as good as it does in person.
looks good guys. now you just need a welder
DONE! Well, almost, still need to tie the C pillar into the frame but A and B are done. I'm really happy with how it turned out! Cam thanks for your help. We'll need to cut back on the long hours for the next project. LOL After this build my new favorite tool is a portable band saw. Clean, fast, quiet cuts! We weighed it at about 235 lbs. Also don't try lifting one alone to move it around or you might end up with your arm in a sling for a few days
NICE! Looks really good man! I definitely like the two pillars there...looks plenty strong and hopefully you never have to fully test it out.
Nice! Super clean and effective. Good job.
Looks great, Pearce! You coming to GSSE this year?
very nice dude!!!shiny new seat too!
now paint your damn hood!!!!
Thanks guys!
Yup I'm planning on being at GSSE.
Don't you know white hood = cooler engine = more HP
Everyone is always wanting me to paint it. Probably cave in and do that this year. You guys have probably never noticed I have a black grill and badly painted over red windshield.
thats funny you say that because i just got rid of my dark colored tow rig and daily driver for a white truck and it seems to be alot cooler inside.. could just be that its alot new and the a/c actually works.
j/k about the paint job, you bought your jeep wrecked IIRC? who cares what it looks like as long as you're going wheelin!
I sound like a broken record but it looks better in person. The brown isn't as overwhelming as the photos make it look. I think the white hood is throwing the photos off some. a lot of times you see pics of rigs online and then you see them in person and they aren't as impressive- this cage is the opposite- extremely clean... well, except for that one drippy weld!
a 5.3 with an alum rad and taurus fan won't care what color the hood is
pearce, any plans to groove your ltb's like cam did?
haha i guess i could have looked a little closer at the pics...
have you wheeled them since the grooving?
Well, it was time I had to keep up with everyone else again. Of course you knew this had to happen after putting 40" tires on! So an opportunity presented itself and I acquired someone else's abandoned project. 2004 5.3 (LM7) and matching 4L60e. The gamble on this abandoned project is I was not able to find out to what extent the trans was worked on. But, the original project owner had to open it up to install the Novak conversion output that's on it. So I'll have to separate it from the engine and do a little investigating. Fortunately the package included a few other parts like radiator, floor shifter, motor mounts, computer, wiring harness, ceramic coated sanderson headers and manual throttle body.
I've been looking at this thing sitting in the garage for too long and I couldn't be more excited to get it going.
Looks like you've got a rear engine Dodge.
Nice find, good luck with the build!
And so today I got started on the first part of the build. Originally I had an Atlas 4 speed on order. Well, that got cancelled when they decided to stop production on them to work out the kinks during high speed operation. It seems the KOH guys found a weak spot in them. That really screwed up my plans and after some time thinking about it I decided to go an alternate route. For my application I really wanted to have 2.7:1 and 3.8:1. And between Stak and Atlas there was only one way to do that. Get an Atlas II and a Northwest Fab Black Box. And as it turned out they just so happened to be coming out with the new Black Box i. The "i" is for integrated. So rather than just bolting it up to the front of an Atlas this one actually replaces the input shaft of the Atlas making a more compact and stronger design. Now I'm back to a 4 speed with no production delays. Also, I imagine that 10.3:1 will be fun to use from time to time.
The integration was pretty straight forward. The instructions were good but the hardest part was getting off the clocking ring assembly with the input shaft and gear. Hitting it with a rubber mallet per the directions wasn't getting it done, so I had to get out the slide hammer. One of those great tools that I rarely use but am always glad to have.
Awesome, Pearce! Does Northwest fab or anywhere else offer any discounts on the black box?
My buddy has been running his 4 speed Atlas for a couple years now. Like you mentioned, he really only wanted it for the 2.7ish and 4.0ish gears, and figured he would never use 10:1. He has found himself using 10:1 more than he originally envisioned. He always has a big smile on his face taking his good old time through some of the trails without ever hitting the gas

No I didn't find any discounts on the Black Box. I worked with High Angle Driveline to start with on the Atlas 4 speed so I stayed with them. Jesse also knows the guys over at NWF so that helped a lot. He did work with me on pricing for some of the accessories though, like yokes.
A the time I started this I had a buddy who also wanted a 4 speed. So asked about any kind of discount for ordering 2 but, of course there wasn't. LOL
Maxxis Trepadors.
Huge thanks to Jims Performance for taking on my harness and computer! He came highly recommended and when I first saw the wiring mess I was going to have to deal with there was no way I had any interest in tackling it. Not only that, many of the wires were chewed up. In less than two weeks the harness and computer were shipped out to him and sent back to me all complete. Everything is labeled, instructions are included where needed and the whole thing has been completely tested. In my case I also had it converted to drive by cable. The harness packaging is amazing. The whole thing probably weighs half as much as it did. Well worth the money. I should have taken a picture of it before it was sent out. But the best I have is when it was in the previous project jeep. What a mess! Now it's all trimmed down and has just one 4 slot fuse block.
Wow. No thanks in that first picture!
