So I'm started to get a little worried about my 44a. I never really thought dragging the 44a too much would actually start shaving down the diff noticeably. Well its starting to and it's making it a PITA to keep fresh bolts in it. I had to grind off 2 this time around =/. I guess its about time for me to build a skid and a truss for it...

On a happier note, this is the first time i've really inspected my aussie in a while. I've seen worn down ones, well I have no idea how that happens because I've had this guy in here for years and the teeth still have sharp corners

I just looked it up, installed in feb '06 so atleast 2.5 years on it so far

It's not just the aluminum pumpkins that get ground down. One of buddies is running a Sammy on D44's and he has had to rebuild the bottom of his pumpkins a couple of times. He just puts in a brass bolt and builds the area up with welds, then turns the bolt out smooths the gasket surface and he is good to go.
If I go too much longer on my D30 I will have to do this same thing.

Yes, a few people make them for the 44a. Search.

And here I always seem to think some people kind of laugh at my skid. I've had a skid on mine since about 2002.

Granted the tubo city one was a pos but it worked fine until it got ripped off which took about 4 years.

......YEah, my buddy and I installed the Aussie in my 44a......we were working kind of separately, so one of us missed a thrust washer. Locker still looks excellent.......I'm just waiting on some new pins and springs.

I'm pretty interested in one for the dual purpose of the diff protection and extra housing strength, if it is strong enough to keep the housing from bending/cracking I think it may be worth the loss of ground clearance.

What I want to do, is mount some spring perches facing down on the tubes right next to the diff and then design a bolt on skid that hugs the diff close, then just build some supports for claytons upper CA's down to the axle tubes, basically making it into a truss thats bolted to the diff housing also.

By bolted you mean bolted to the top of the diff using the 3 bolt holes, then welded to the tubes out wider, or right next to the diff?

near the diff. Same concept as the MVC truss, but on top and narrower.

i really doubt that "truss" does much to keep twisting down. id do the skid and then a boxed steel truss on top.

That truss will do next to nothing for housing rigidity. That thing looks like it consumes way too much ground clearance as well. Might as well run a 14 bolt on 31s.

For what it's worth, i have that same truss and i beat the crap out of it. It works, all be-it not the best design in the world, i don't tear up the precious aluminum and it holds up well on the rocks!
