umm...on the way to school i floored it and destroyed the 8.8's gears
I'm just hoping the ARB isn't messed up by it. i had the dealership i work at come tow it in while i was at school and they said "everything there got torn up"
you gassed it and broke the 8.8?
You got some kind of big block in there youre not telling us about?
That sucks!!....well open it and see wat the deal is..
I had the dealership I work at tow it in for me and look at it while I was in school so I haven't looked at it yet. I thought it was the tranny cause it grinded going into park, so I told them to mess check it out. Ill get a look at it soon and take pictures maybe
getting some yukon 4.88's for the 8.8 to replace my destroyed ones, and a set of lube locker gaskets for the 44/8.8 to keep the juice inside the pumpkins
ring/pinion teeth got f'd and a shim thing snapped in half
pieces of the shim looking thing were down in the bottom
cut marks on the side of the arb
what are those bolts in bottom from, the arb?

Supposed to be holding the ring gear to the arb carrier... Kinda came out
And all that damage is from driving on the road and having it grenade, mr lead foot?
yep, and if theres anything else heavier than lead it would be the metaphor for my foot while driving. i let the 5.2 loose a lot...and now i'm paying for it.
Which broke first the chicken or the egg?
Either the ring gear bolts came loose from the carrier, or you broke a tooth off the ring gear from lack of lubrication and it jammed in between the pinion or the housing. you can tell there has been a ton of movement in between the ARB and ring gear from the wear on the ARB itself. Was it not making noise before it went kaboom? better start taking it apart...
I doubt you drive that hard. how much gear lube was in there?

very little lube left in there, but they said it looked like the bolts backed out of the carrier and theres about 2-3 loose and 3 or 4 that fell out. that picture is of it not being messed with thats what i got to the shop to find my rearend looking like.
and i drive hard on the street, easy on the trails. when it broke i punched it to the floor and the jeep raised up like it does in acceleration and "CRACK" and the jeep imediately went back down and no more power to the wheels. i could feel it when the gears snapped.
One of the guys I wheel with he has a arb in his 30 front axle and ever since he got it he cannot keep the ring gear bolts tight they keep backing out for some reason. He has locktited them and everything. The last time they came loose it looked just about like yours took out the ring and pinion and broke all the bolt heads. So he ended up tack welding all the bolt heads so they couldnt back out
more pictures....got the gears, install kit, lube lockers for f/r, and new bearings and races for the ARB on the way
pieces of the speedo ring that goes between the ring gear and the carrier that broke in half
2 f'd bolts that came out of the carrier, and then theres 3 others that came out but they looked normal...5 bolts overall came out
limit strap setup to the triangulated shock mount cam had his shocks running to
droop-age
gears and lube lockers for f/r will be here tomorrow, just waiting on one last bearing to come from austrialia for the ARB carrier.
everything should ready to get in the jeep on monday hopefully.
it's like a self inflicted christmas, but i'm still waiting on bearings and races and shiz to come from australia from ARB.
turns out i broke the ARB into 3 pieces, so a open carrier and an aussie are going in for now...anyone know about ARB's policy on replacing their POS locker?
Before you call ARB, make 100% sure you know if the warranty applies only to the original owner. Then find out warranty period. I doubt I have a receipt, but a serial number or date of manufacture should be stamped on the locker somewhere.
Normally for warranties, vendors like to go through the original dealer, which was Peak Empire Extreme Offroad (who is no longer in business BTW)... So I'm thinking you might be SOL. But let me know if I can help out by making a phone call to ARB for you.
The ARB has a lot more than three pieces from the factory, so which piece are you talking about that broke? If the rest of the parts survived, you may be able to get a replacement part from ARB and have someone rebuild it for you. Or try it yourself if you're interested in learning something.
i had it at the ford dealership i work at since its a ford axle, they were going to set up the gears, but they're idiots...so i got it towed to the local 4 wheel parts store since they are the most qualified place in town to deal with a ARB (even though i'd rather not use 4wp, but w/e). they took the carrier out and it 'broke into 3 pieces'. i haven't had a chance to go by and check it out, but they said i have quite a trophy piece now and that they had never seen a ARB break like this before and they almost all run ARB's in their rigs. from my understanding, the carrier piece itself has become 3 pieces....i'll take some photos for everyone of my prized cracked into 3 pieces ARB
part in my hand is where the ring gear bolts to.....which should be attached to the rest of the carrier. i broke that bitch good
