Bought some 4.56's for my 8.8 used. Got them off craigslist from a guy in Cali.
Box came today and found this:
Would you run these gears?
I could try to get my money back.... but I'm not sure if that will be possible.
Good ol' craigslist.
Derek
There was a blurry picture of a ring gear in the box! OH NOES!!!!
Seriously though, I had to grind down one of the teeth on my 8.8 4.56 ring gear to get the cross pin in the carrier.
And used gears FTL anyways.
i got some new pics on the way.
the top inside corner of the tooth has been chipped off.
Its a clean cut, however. Im just not sure if it will survive.
here are some better pics.
I know i should have just gone with new gears, but works been slow.
Sorry Dave, I didnt see your post before i made my second one. I'm not sure if he had to grind down this tooth or if it chipped off. Either way, no cracks or burrs.
Charlie Wenzel strikes again... That's a pretty big chip. How many teeth make contact with 4.56s in an 8.8 gearset? And what's your wheeling style like?
Have you experienced any problems so far, Dave? Any extra noise?
Did you use the notched cross pin after you ground down the gears?
sounds good.
I sent an email to the guy i bought these from. Hopefully he will get back to me. Maybe he just had to grind down this gear for the same reason you did.
Thanks for the help
Turn the flower on your camera.
Mine looks like that too, had to grind it down to get the crosspin in and out like dave. Most people do it so they dont have to remove the ring gear to get the inside gears out
You should be fine. Either the owner cut it down to fit a crosspin like others have said or he broke one and he smoothed it out. I would doubt that it would break that clean. Either way, with only one tooth broken you should be fine.
Just curious, how did he advertise them?? Did he tell you it was cut?
worse comes to worse take the burrs off the chip and run it.
