i really like those wheels.
Theyre procomp. ive seen them in mags before, just never on a jeep.
The cleanup continues...
I got up early today and headed out to the farm. Engine is due in and I had a bit more cleaning up to do to various components, brackets, header, and engine bay. It was hot an cleaning this really sucked.
Cleaing up didn't require to many pictures. This was somewhere around the halfway point...I had a beer an snapped some pictures.
Now onto the header. I decided to wrap it at a feeble attempt to keep under hood temps down and stop it from super heating the air in my intake manifold...a problem with the 4 Hos in my opinion. If you have never wrapped a header...these are the basic steps. Clean, paint, wrap, tie, and paint again with some ceramic stuff. FYI. Soak the tape in water to help the wrapping process, then heat the manifold and the tape will tighten up a bit (you can see my ghetto heater in one of the shots...hot engine running on a hot day.) Don't skimp, you need good wrap, stainless steel ties, and the ceramic coating...other wise it will fall apart and be more prone to rusting.
There was more cleaning....and even more cleaning...nothing picture worthy though. Waiting on engine...lots to do.
Now the build starts. I will update the Titan Stroker thread soon, but the engine arrived in Wichita at 8am today...as promised. Unfortunately, the little trucking company that it got handed off to was a huge POS. I got pissed and went and picked the motor up. This was not Titan's fault and shouldn't reflect poorly on them. Anyways, this is just a collection of assembly pictures taken when ever I remembered to snap one...but you can see the progress. As stated...more written details in the Titan Stroker thread soon to come.
The shop, if that ain't country I'll kiss your ass.
The Titan motor as delivered. Actually it comes black, I wanted gray.
My Hemi orange timing cover and harmonic balancer.
Shot of the crank.
Various brakets and the pan.
Thrmostat housing and more brackets.
Intake and Exhuast.
Who did your header whap? Not too shabby!
Valve Cover...
We have reached a stopping point for the day (due to a goofed up exhaust stud), but here are the results...
I'm pretty pleased with today's work. One goofed up stud, two bracket bolts are MIA, found out one of my idler pullys needs replaced, and a few vacuum lines are in trouble. Other than that things went well. It was hard to stop...we are very close to stabbing it back in, but it was late and we were getting tipsy. So we wait until tommorow.
VERY nice...
I had planned the same colors for my new 5.2 goin in next month, now its gonna look like im copyin you..lmao
Well shit...somehow I killed the sim card in my camera...after it was full of installation pictures. Anyways, I did manage to get a card off of my friend and take a few shots.
Got up at 6am on Saturday and drove out to the farm. Had to tap and helicoil an exhaust stud. Not sure if it was weak or maybe I broke it. No big deal though, a trip to the store and all was well. Installation went really well. My friend (who owns the farm) was working on top and I was working on bottom...installing tranny bolts, exhaust, starter, and such. Some friends of his stopped by (probably to escape thier wives) and jumped right in to help out...thus justifying thier absence to thier wives I think. Anyways, by the time I had things wrapped up underneath...they were almost ready to drop in the radiator.
Everything went flawlessly, distributer dropped right in, we unplugged coil...cranked till we had a bit of pressure, plugged it back in and whamo...fired right up. This is right before ignition.
Don't mind the smoke...wrapped headers smoke like a bitch the first few times they are fired up.
That is all the pics I have right now...trying to resurrect my sim card. I'll post a bit more info in the stroker thread here...
http://www.mallcrawlin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16564
...but I can tell you, this thing is insanely powerfull. About 15 minutes after being fired up, without much effort she laid down dual 30 foot blackmarks on the highway by the farm. I had to let out of it...sad thing is I don't even think I broke 3500 rpms. Remember, I'm wearing 35s with a detriot. Drove home later that day, my stock Grand has to kick out of overdrive about 8 times making this trip. New stroker didn't kick out once...matter of fact, I accelerated up 3 of the hills in overdrive. Wow. More later, still have lot's of little shit to do!
looks damn good! I too was VERY surprised at the power of a stroked 4.0 -> 4.7L in my brothers XJ. the butt dyno says it hauls ass
Damn, your engine is sweet and I hope to do what you did to mine engine.
Thanks guys...means a lot to me. I've still got to replace wires, cap, and rotor. I need to get a new belt, and I wan't to replace all the hoses and clean up some of the other stuff. I'm looking for a way to snorkel it, or work on an H2 style above to hood intake so I can remove that box and add a second battery. Then it will be ready to abuse again, lol. I am very happy with the ways things worked out. Aside from splurging on the Stroker as opposed to a remaned stocker...I built on a pretty tight budget. Spent a lot of time cleaning and painting...probably 2 full days with wire brushes and drill attachments.
Man you are just tearin through this stuff. We REALLY need to find time to go wheelin after you finish this all up!
Great job. I like the color combo too.
Looking good man, Wish I had the cash to ditch my tired 4.0 for a stroker, what was the total cost for this build? any ball park figure?
As of right now...grand total...about $2900-3000..but I fixed a lot of things that wouldn't be required on every vehicle...ie motor mounts, tune up, Hemi Orange paint, regular maintenance that I neglected...etc.
I'm having some trouble with the timing at the moment for the record. I grinded down the ears of the distributer hold down...but apparently not enough. I mean it runs like a madman, but there is still some tweaking to do. I try to adjust the timing by ear, but it seems either there is something I am un-aware of or I may have to look into my fuel system. It has to turn over a few times before kicking in...classic sign of retarded timing. I bought a light today, but I had to go to work so I took off in the DD Jeep and will have to deal with that this weekend.
I'm a bit spooked though, I'm getting mixed opinions on timing the damn thing. Some say you can't...it's all controlled by the crank position sensor, and others say I need to grind off more of the "ears" on the holdown so I can move the spark. Anyways...that coupled with a spacer on the harmonic balancer I forgot/didn't know I needed...and I have a few bugs to work out. I will keep you all in the loop...wish I had more time at home to mess with it.
Anyways, if you recycle parts you could get things done with Titan for well under 3 grand...I spent lots more replacing things I knew where old and would be easier to replace with the motor on a stand....but not "needed", per say.
~dirty
Well, I grinded the ears down on the distributor so I could "attmpt" to time it better. And I can time it, to an extent, but moreover...once it get's anywhere near right the computer takes over and kinda does what it wants regardless of my settings. Things are looking up though, beast is still running great, although a bit hot for my liking. Not sure if it might be running lean, doubt it though...seems to go through gas pretty well.
I have a trip to my friends dealership in the city soon to rebuild the pinion on my HP30...there we can hook it up to all the fancy computers and fine tune it.
As to it running hot, I'm looking at a new radiator/fan/vent solution. I know electric is the way to go...but I really hate to add more electronics, I would much rather just have a mechanical solution. I'm having no shortage of power...meh...we shall see!
thats the prettiest 4.0 ive ever seen
During the construction or re-construction phase of your projects...don't ever get in too much of a hurry and forget about the outer shafts in a HP d30...results are bad.
You could say that, lol. I was in a hurry, have a trip to the city where my friend was going to help me rebuild both my axles at his stealership (it's just sooo much easier on a lift with kick ass tools).
Front pinion was seriously thrashed...I feared it was going to chew up my 4.88s and locker, so I decided to pull (inner only) axle shafts and driveshaft before the three hour interstate trip. Anyways, it was one of those days...people bugging me, people calling me, hot as hell, new cell phone broke, running out of daylight, running out of time, broken jack, broken ratchet...you name it, the perfect storm. Lost my concentration and hurried myself while doing work I have done a million times before. Forgot to stick in my spare outers. I really hate it when I do something this fawkin' dumb.
Oh well, all I can hope at this point is that everyone gets a good laugh out of my stupidity, lol. Enjoy MC!
Casualties...both wheel bearings, both braklines, both knuckles, both the castle nuts on lower ball joints (I have no idea how I'm gonna get those off), and my dignity. Hopefully my rims aren't bent, but everything else seems ok. I got out of the car...and for a split second was very pissed...then I just started laughing hysterically. Perfect end to a "perfect" day.
This is why I drink. More pics available upon request, lol.
No, the passenger gave out about 1.2 seconds before the driver, lol. This one descibes the situation a bit better I thinks.
Me, right after giggling hysterically for about 10 minutes...I walked a block to my house and picked up little Heep. I know it's dark, but you can kinda see the marks left by my knuckels..lol.
Close up of the carnage...
Oh well, I was looking to upgrade steering...now it appears I have no choice. I'm locking myself in my basement and playing PS3 for the next few days. Hopefully nothing catastrophic can happen down there. Save me Tom Cruise!, save me Oprah Winfrey!...
Dude, you made my day.
That SUCKS
