Might have found one of these, it all depends on if it's worth it and and also what price I can get it for.
It's 8 lug, 3.54 and open. Needs to be rebuilt of course.
Now is this a good year to use for the Ford HP D44?
The guy is asking $550 with a rear 60 (I've got a rear) so I'm hoping I can get it for $200-250.
Price out how much it will cost, will you keep it 8 lug? Gearing cost and locker? Keeping the stock shafts? Stock u-joints? And then all of the little stuff, bearings, ball joints, etc? $200 would be the highest I'd go if I'm having to rebuild the whole axle.
Remember the HP44's out of F-250s are different than the F-150 axles, they're leaf sprung so they don't have the radius arms and they have a bigger WMS (I believe its ~69.5")
I know it's gonna cost and it's no D60 but whatever, it'll do for now.
My real question was in regards to having the mounts cast into the tubes.
From what I understand, these are the BAD years for D44's because of the cast wedges. But like jfowl said, I'm pretty sure that only applies to the F-150 ones, although I could be wrong. Can you go take a look?
And I know that prices for these sorts of things vary by location, but I don't think I'd pay much more than $250 for that out here.
I don't plan to pay much more then that.
Cast wedges?
I believe the HP44 axle you want to look for is from the 76-79 Supercab and has weld on wedges. Should you not want a full width rig, this axle is fairly easy to cut down to use waggy shafts.
78-79 f250= leaf sprung HP44 or snow fighter with a HPD60 (no matter what cab it has)
78-79 f150 = Cast wedges
The weld on wedges are pre-78 on f150's
IF its 8 lug its a leaf sprung axle none of the wedge bullshit....its a HD44. Basically a regular dana 44 with different spindles, and Dana 60 brakes. Shafts are hard as hell to find. My buddy just snapped one on his and had to buy alloys for replacements (back-ordered too).
Mike
should have thicker axle tubes too 1/2"
cast wedges aren't the end of the world if you don't mind running ford style radius arms.
replacement shafts are a pain, people want an arm and a leg for them and it's not that much more to upgrade to alloys. I picked up a whole axle for spare parts because it was cheaper than buying just shafts.
he doesnt really have a plan, i dont think.
