I've got a Midland 1001z with a no name PA speaker plugged into it.
My issue is you can barely hear the PA, especially with the engine on.

I'm wondering if an amplified mic hooked up to the CB will help things out?

This issue is most likely the small amplifier and/or small speaker. Adding gain at the mic won't help, you need to fix what is actually making the noise: amplifier and speaker.

Speaker has no amp so I need an amp'd speaker I guess.

The last smaller form-factor CB I had (Cobra 19 Ultra back in high school) was a piece of shit with my PA. It wasn't until I got my Cobra 25 that I was able to blast people's eardrums. Probably a shit amp for the PA output on that Midland unit.

I went with an electronic air horn and a 200watt speaker (some of the same stuff used by emergency service vehicles).

Trust me when I get on the PA you can hear it no problem!!!!!!!

What is amplifying the speaker, was my question. Every speaker needs an amplifier, it is not built into the speaker usually...

With a CB, there's generally a teeny tiny amp in the unit to power the PA.

Well I guess my speaker is only 100 watts, but still no problem with sound volume.

Here is the speaker I have:

And here is the air horn I have:

100 watts means your speaker can "handle" 100 watts of input, it rarely has anything to do with volume / output, though.

My CB/HAM radio nut friend said you can add an amp to the PA speaker or buy one that has an amp built into it.

What better way to scream at bikers to remind them to ride single file?
What better way to make sheep scatter with the sound of a wolf growling?
What better way to make children jump and run screaming home to mommy because the boogeyman was coming to eat their hearts?

okay, maybe that last one was over the top

Sometimes while driving I feel the need to...voice my opinion =P haha. I'm thinkin about plugging my CB PA output into the 3.5mm input I have for my stereo, see what kind of signal I can get out of it. Would be obnoxious inside, but still be loud and audible outside without spending more money haha.

There was a thread on Pirate about a guy trying to pimp his website which sold train horns. They had some videos and they were funny as shit.
