Help anyone!!
I have a 1989 Wrangler, which used to have a manual transmission. I have swap the transmission for an Automatic from a 1997 Grand Cherokee. I believe it is a 42RE.
I have looked all over for a shifter, but no one seems to make one for this type of transmission.
Can anyone tell me where to buy one?
Regards,
Jose
Maybe this is stating the obvious, but why not get a shifter from the Grand Cherokee you took the tranny from?
Well one of the main issues I see is that the 42re isn't made for the yj, so you aren't going to find it anywhere. You should've installed an AW4, because that was available in the XJ, which uses the same parts as a YJ for the most part.
Check out Stu-offroad, he's put an aw4 into a TJ a did a writeup for it.
I know I could use one from an cherokee, but I was looking for an aftermarket one.
Thanks.
Spykosshow, excuse my ignorance, but what is the diffence between an AW4 and a 42RE?
AW4 is a good transmission and the 42RE is a piece of shit.
Yup, that about sums it up.
How can I tell if I have a 42RE or an AW4? What do I need to look for on the transmission to identify it?
yeah pretty much I'd sell the 42re and get a AW4!
PLUS I think the 42re is integrated into the ECU and PCM of the grand so it might be a real pain to wire into a YJ.
The AW4 is all one piece and the 42re is a 2 piece transmission. and they only did the AW4 in a grand in very early 93.
I wish I had a AW4 in mine
Thank you for the answers. My 42RE is already installed and wired in my YJ...I guess I have to keep looking for a shifter. I was told that I could modify a Lokar Shifter. I am going to give that a try. I will let you guys know how it works.
I've got a spare shifter assembly for the 42re. I'll sell it to you.
Does the 42re also come in the 5.2 orvis edition if so thanks I know what to look for if not damn searchin don't work when you get that technical anyone want to take this one. If so then I'll go with the AW4
